Disconnect the battery earth at the battery post.
Connect one ammeter lead to battery post.
Connect other ammeter lead to earth point in engine bay, the EARTH jump stud is a good place.

Note, NOT the +ve jump stud.

Having connected the ammeter and pulled the fuses you then need to let the car go to sleep before reading the ammeter, about 20minutes.

Ok, that's clear, thanks a lot for supporting a newbie mechanic Wink

but, newbie mode is still on! where's exactly the EARTH jump stud?

Its on top of the air suspension strut, looks like the +ve jump stud but any bolt will do.

When you get to the bottom of this - if you ever do - please let me know. Mine has gone for two weeks parked at airports and started no problem. Today two days on the drive and although it turned over (just) it wouldn't start, the C-Tek is connected and it'll be fine in 20 minutes. It's a new battery (big Bosch as recommended by others) and the only difference from the old one is it will support whatever the drain is, run the FBH for 10 mins and start the car after being left for 1 night.
I share your pain Sad Geoff

Ok so I got the car back and did the tests:
After the car had been off for a while, unplugged negative cable, measured with the ohmmeter set to 200m and got 0.
UNplugged fuses 34 & 64 for AC, measured again: 0. 2008 TDV8 VOGUE - Buckingham Blue on Sand

Flat battery again tonight.
I unplugged all 4 fuses for audio & AC every time I was leaving the car alone more than 30 mins.
What are your thoughts about that?
Can the fsr still be faulty?
What are the next tests I should conduce? 2008 TDV8 VOGUE - Buckingham Blue on Sand

Ibartsimp,

This must be quite frustrating, but im sure you will get the the bottom of the drain issues.

Firstly, i read that you are getting the multimeter to read zero. This is possibly incorrect ( i say possibly because it depends on the how many decimal places it reads to).

There are two likely reasons, the internal , fuse has blown (because when the doors are unlocked and the car is awake, the current draw can be around 14amp), or it is being used incorrect. If you post a picture of the multimeter we can tell you how to set it up.

Also the best way i find to do the test with a low current multimeter like yours is;

open the bonnet, keep it unlocked

Turn off the ignition, and remove the key. (Keep the key close by you though, as the alarm may go off and you need to
disable it)

Wait at least 2 minutes ( I gave it 5) for car systems to shut down such as the SatNav and Fuel Guage

disconnect the Earth terminal (brown lead)

then clip the black lead of the multimeter to the battery and the red lead to the cable you took off the terminal.

You should have a reading of around 3.0amps.

After 15-20 (mine takes 23mins?) you should have <0.1amp.

Let us know how you get on.

P.s the above portion of the disconnect is taken from the wiki Thumbs Up

Thanks for the in depth reply. Indeed, I admit that the 0 reading on the ohmmeter is not normal.
I think (but not sure) I have done the measure properly but will retry as soon as the battery is recharged & I have time later today.
You have a picture of my tool here http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post163767.html#163767 but is there another test I can do (not on the car for instance) to know for sure if the tool itself is working properly or not? 2008 TDV8 VOGUE - Buckingham Blue on Sand

Procedure for testing for current drain from circuits.

On multimeter set dial to 10A with red lead as per your picture, black lead in 10A DC connection.
Disconnect earth lead from battery terminal or body connection.
Connect multimeter leads to battery -ve terminal and -ve jump stud. using crocodile type clips.
Open car door and then close.
Your ammeter dial should then be reading approx 5-7A
Leave car for 25min to go to sleep or until red light next to P goes out.
Read ammeter and record reading, This might read about 0.200A ie 200mA.
You now have the total current drain on the car.
Remove say Fuse 49.
Close car door, let car go to sleep again.
Read ammeter dial and record reading.
If the reading has changed (lower) from origonal reading previously recorded it indicates a current drain has been eliminated by removing Fuse 49.
ie you have a current drain on Fuse 49 which shouldn't be there.
Say for example with Fuse 49 removed the reading was 0.100A the current drain on Fuse 49 was 0.200 - 0.100 = 0.100A.
If the reading did not change from original, you have no current drain on Fuse 49.
You then need to carry out this proceedure for every fuse, one by one.
Takes a long time but you will find the problem doing this.

If I can find my list I will post a list of fuses I would remove one by one initially from my experience these will be the most likely to cause problems.

The minimal current drain on the car you should expect is in the order of 50-80mA but the lower the better.

Guys, thanks for your support !
Here's where I stand.
It is possible that I didn't have a flat battery yesterday. Indeed, I just discovered that I had removed Fuse 25... (instead of 22) which seems to be the starter motor. Too late to know since the battery is now recharged.
However, I have conducted some tests. Here are the results.
My ohmmeter seems to work correctly.
I've done this wiring, put it on the car battery, the light lit and it read 1.87A on the ohmmetter. I did the same on a 1.5V aa battery and read 0.6 (no light because source is to weak i suppose).

Secondly, I did this wiring. Here the ohmmeter says 0. Is this the correct wiring?

UPDATE : I now have correctly wired the ohmmeter (from the -ve terminal to the -ve wire) and now I read the tension going down. from 5 to now around 4, waiting for all systems to go down
for future noobs: the two green circles are what needs to be connected through the ohmmeter

Thumbs Up

You can connect to the Jump Stud, I just don't think you had a good connection to it. You really need some crocodile clips to connect to the earth terminal on the battery and the jump stud.

now reads 0.01, meaning I have no drain?
ps: I now use crocodile clips 2008 TDV8 VOGUE - Buckingham Blue on Sand
