My current theory is that the Magna engineers will have specified ‘proper’ bearings for their transfer box but then their procurement people found some nice cheap ones from Slovakia, and these are not up to the task. This theory is based on a sample of one and I may well be proved wrong on this! I still find it interesting that Magna have chosen to axially preload this input bearing (with two disc springs/Belleville washers) - makes you wonder if they saw issues with this bearing during development?

The two halves of the casing come apart easily. The Land Rover dealers are ‘allowed’ to do this as it’s a necessity for the replacement of the front & rear driveshaft flange seals. There’s no paper gasket for the joint face – just sealant.

I’ve never tried removing one of these transfer boxes myself. From the workshop manual it appears pretty straightforward but it looks as though the top four bolts are a pain to access and Land Rover recommend a special tool (wrench adaptor) :

I’ve finally got around to dismantling the combined centre differential & low range reduction epicyclic assembly.

The assembly just slides out of the shifting sleeve :

which stays in place, retained by the shift fork :

but can then be twisted & turned to release it from the shift fork’s sliding blocks :

The six E12 Torx bolts can be removed (with some difficulty - the threads being micro-encapsulated with Loctite) to release the end plate from the differential assembly :

The rear output flange bevel drive gear then lifts out :

to reveal what can only be described as a triumph of packaging by the Magna engineers where they’ve managed to integrate the 50:50 front/rear bevel gear differential and the reduction epicyclic for low range into the same unit :

The annulus gear for the reduction gearing, which is either earthed to the casing by the shifting sleeve for low range or connected to the carrier to lock the whole assembly together for high range (1:1), slides off :

The triple-planet reduction epicyclic tooth numbers are 43T sun, 21T planet, 83T annulus giving a reduction ratio for low range of (83+43)/43 = 2.93023256

There are synchronisers clipped to both the carrier and the earthing point into which the two ends of the shifting sleeve slide to accomplish the smooth engagement of each range :

Very interesting, informative write up Phil. I really like to read this one and ZF 6HP26 write ups.

I have changed these simple shaft bearings couple months ago and I would like guys to know in future that 6210 C3 from ZKL is specially designed for this transfer box as this bearing with C3 has special inner bearing egde cut.

When i found this bearing failed and saw ZKL i though that replace with SKF is much better and bought set of all four bearings (if I remember 6209 6210 6211 6212) from SKF but then realised that SKF inner ring does not have that cut edge and can not fit to its place so I went to other local bearing specialist and was lucky to find out that they will deliver that C3 bearing in one day.

Phil you're top mate Thumbs Up

Fabulous post Phil!

I have the same transfer case with a stretched chain (like the old ones).

Trying to find a chain. Any suggestions?

I believe that Cobra Transmission (Miami) stock the chains

United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Santorini Black

Hi phil,

Having to have my transfer box sealed for the 3rd time, as it keeps leaking from the silicone gasket!

Any idea what the best gasket silicone is, as i will get some and throw it in the direction of the dealership....

They just dont seem to be able to get it right and it fails after a few months. Not sure what they might be dong wrong apart from not using enough silicone, not letting it sit for a few mins before mating the faces or torquing it immediately, as opposed to letting it set up for an hour fingertight/5lbft.

Any ideas methods for making this a good seal would be gratefully received. Im half thinking of getting a refubished one to give them to fit! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi Phil.

have you heard of porosity in the casing? Or even a crack?

I have a re-occuring oil leak issue?

Yes I have, though I’m struggling to find the information again. It may have been from a Discovery or RR Sport bulletin board because they use the same transfer box. I definitely recall seeing photos of cracked/porous transfer box casings and they’d been like that since new. I’ll see if I can find it again.
