Turbo failure - very, very rare on the 4.4 and no evidence it was connected to the drain system. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I never said it was connected with the drain system. That said if there’s blue smoke and pre ignition happening, it doesn’t have to go much further to get to runaway state. Once it goes out of control even momentarily the high revs do more damage to the turbos which can then lead to more oil leaking and away it goes to the engine scrapyard after a few minutes of scary uncontrolled RPM. It’s happened to me once with a Ford Mondeo until you’ve witnessed it once you really don’t appreciate just how scary the whole episode is. The Mondeo took about 4 minutes before throwing a rod and bursting into flames. Prior to the runaway it used no oil and there was no smoke, it’s probably why I was really cautious with my fatty when I had the smoke and pre ignition. BMW i3 Electric Car

No 'pre-ignition' on diesels. A runaway diesel fueled by engine oil needs a significant continuous flow of oil from a failed turbo seal. Seen a disco 1 do it at a road junction manybyears ago. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

We will have to agree to differ regarding pre ignition. If theres fuel in the cylinder and the temperature increases sufficiently it will fire, not necessarily at the right time compared to diesel injection which injects diesel at the right time when the conditions in the cylinder are correct for ignition to happen. These conditions are met before the correct ignition angle so if fuel is in there and it fires, the ignition point will be advanced, the relative pinking and knocking will be heard.
You can also witness pre ignition by spraying easy start or similar into a diesel, they knock like crazy. BMW i3 Electric Car

Probably best to call it a misfire rather than preignition and certainly any combustible substance in the cylinder will do this esp oil. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

A misfire would be a cylinder not firingf at all rather than firing early? Pre ignition is a much more accurate term for whats happening i.e. ignition taking place before the correct time. BMW i3 Electric Car

Sorry but no it cant fire late. Heat is increased as compression takes place, when the heat is such that the flashpoint is reached the fuel ignites. After top dead centre pressure is reducing and therefore temperature reducing. If the oil in cylinder hasnt ignited during compression, theres little (read no) chance of it firing after TDC. Diesel of course is timed to be injected at the appropriate time just before TDC when the heat is sufficient for it to fire immediately. BMW i3 Electric Car
