Really? where does the oil pool? surely not in the exhaust side? I understood that it was back pressure in the drain that was forcing oild through the seals, possibly both exhaust and inlet. The massive amounts of smoke occurred when it's given some wellie when the turbo blows the oil from the inlet side into the engine. Oil from the secondary turbo of my 3.0 TDV6 D4 certainy went through the engine and got burnt causing lots of smoke, coughing and pre-ignition with wide throttle openings until the smoke/oil cleared prior to my fitting the TDV6 revised drain. Hence my request to the selling dealer when purchasing my almost new L322 to have the modification done as part of the deal as I knew that it wasn't a simple bolt-on task like the TDV6 revised drain. However the oil is never going to cause runaway because the air supply to the secondary turbo and its oil pool gets shut-off by the inlet isolation valve when the throttle is relaxed or when the ignition is switched off, so as soon as the driver backs-off the oil supply is cut-off.

The smoking issue with these engines is to do the drain system which won’t cause a runaway engine. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

I am partially convinced smoke level from the second turbo is linked to particular engine oils (normally my view would be engine oil is engine oil and it makes no difference).

As I said earlier Gary, this is the first time I've used another oil other than Shell Helix AF-L.

I use the S&A oil in my 4.4TDV8 and I don't have the smoke, nor do I have the turbo drain mod. 2012 (L322) 4.4TDV8 Vogue SE, RSE, Fuji White over Arabica. The drain mod definitely did resolve the issue completely with mine, I even had my son drive behind me for 20 miles or so really steady, when I booted it no smoke at all. Previously before the drain mod it would poured out thick blue smoke, the engine pinking and visibility at the back zero, you couldn't see the car behind. Green Oval were fully conversant with the mod, assured me it would resolve the issue and they were really confident and as it turned out, they were right.
