Sounds like a 30 minute job at the local Indy and £50 + VAT.

Must be better than spending three days covered in oil removing all skin from Knuckles and breaking your tool-kit Wink

Yep - sound simple - until you look and see where it is located Sad
Hopefully it will be an easy job - but......knowing Land Rover and all there thought at making things sooo easy to take apart Rolling Eyes it may take a while Mr. Green

Right - finally changed the starter motor - what a pig of a job !
The two bolts that hold the starter motor on are the 'inverted' torx type and require an E12 socket to get them off One can be reached with the car jacked up from underneath - just - (with the lower perspex splash shield removed) and the other - well... sitting on top of the engine with the bonnet raised to the full 90 degrees position you can just about reach in and get a 3/8 ring spanner on to it and turn it a 1/4 turn each time (because of all the breather pipes and cables in the way) - and it's the longest and stiffest bolt in the world Sad Initially requiring great force whilst under the car just to get purchase and 'crack' it loose. To prevent damage to any bits whilst I did this I managed to stop the spanner doing any damage by inserting my thumb in the way - hence one great black thumb nail ! Sad
When the top one is 'slack' then you sit on top of the engine - much to the amusement of passers by (apparantly there was a wedding on somewhere ? I don't know Whistle )and remove the starter from the housing. However once it's loose you can then turn it to gain proper access to the 2 x small wires on the solenoid (1 x 8mm and 1 x 10mm socket) easy to do - however Land Rover/BMW decided to position the oil dip stick tube just right so this to is one more pig of a job !
Refitting the new one is a straight forward - reversal of above procedures with the exception that whilst lowering and twisting the starter motor back in there is a small but very very sharp 'bit' on the side of the bellhousing that you must slice your finger open ! I did - no messing - and the red blood just looks so cool against the black pipes and green Land Rover badge on top of the engine !! Big Cry
Ensure that of course you have removed the battery negative cable before you start - this then presents an excellent opertunity to clean up and regrease all cable attatchment points and connectors.
Finally after attatching and tightening everything just start the car and turn the steering from full lock to full lock to reset the air suspension - and hey presto - job done !
Time I took @ 2 1/2 hours Mr. Green
Oh and also copper slipped all nuts and bolts for future ease of removal. And I managed to knock a braided ruber hose off - and for the life of me cannot find where it connects back on ?? It 'T's in to another pipe of which both ends are connected to the bottom of the engine mounts ? - just @9" inboard of the suspension units - a breather pipe ?any ideas ? Confused

Sounds like a sh#t of a job Hope I never have to do. But then Its not as bad as the new Toyota TDV8. Starter moter is inside bellhousing that has to be split. $14000 in done at a garage. About $10000 (not sure what that is in pounds[gbp 6400 ???]) just for the starter moter so Ive been told

So think yourself lucky with just some funny looks and bruised nuckles

Another starter bites the dust Sad
It was out of a 2004 breaker but...heres the thing - you cannot get a replacement solenoid ! They can sell you a new starter or a refurbed one with a new solenoid on but not the bit on its own ! My local autoelectrician has spent the last few days searching for one to be told no way Shocked
So...Saturday its another pig of a job doing it all over again ! Big Cry

Thanks for that - it certainly comes from the engine mounts but I can't seem to find where it connects on to Confused It goes onto something on the passenger side of the engine but thats all I can see !
