Heard a comment off someone saying that when they drilled into the Merc Sprinter bottle jack to RR modify it, that oil or grease leaked out.

I've just put the very same jack in our spare wheel recess for storage. It's lying horizontally (in the bottom left recess space as you look down over the stored spare wheel). Does anyone please know if oil or grease is likely to leak out of this jack if left lying horizontal?

Mines horizontal in a small plastic tool box in the boot - not noticed any leakage from it. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

i've also had mine horizontal for long periods, but i do rotate it 180 degrees every few months and no problems.. ... - .- -.

You don't drill into the jack at all to fit a RangeRover adapter. If you do it will leak.
You simply remove the fitted shaft head and fit the jack adapter in it's place by drilling a 16mm hole in the base of the adapter and preferably fitting it in place with a suitable pin.
What would leak oil is if you leave the jack adapter loose on the shaft and inadvertently push the shaft too far into the jack body.
The oil then has a good chance of leaking out round the top seal.

just done mine today ,ordered the ali block of ebay got my jack for 10 pounds of a friend ,drilled and fitted new roll pin ,great mod.

Did you trim alli block or use as it came just drilling it ?

Thank you to all contributors to this thread. I now have a jack fitted with the adaptor.
I hope I never need to use it, however feel much better knowing it's there.

These blue Viking Horns are how the top of the jack shaft looks when you buy it. The horn is removed by tapping out the metal pin from the horn (I lined up a thin Allen key and tapped the Allen key until the pin came out):

Hi yes I'd read that bit and understood the context but the link to the adaptor shows a block with a lot larger base !

Picture of my jack after removing the blue horns and with the underside of the BMW adaptor on show to the right of the jack. The shaft hole should be drilled into the centre of the BMW adaptor base face that is on view in my image.

The BMW adaptor doesn't actually then need a hole drilled into the side wall to accommodate a new fixing pin because in fact the BMW adaptor will sit nicely onto the shaft after the 16mm centre hole is drilled into the adaptor, although mine has had the pin hole drilled in:

Interesting thread. What is the reason for this? Is the existing jack that comes with the car useless / dangerous / flimsy ??

existing scissor jack does work and many have used it but it is very flimsy and really not up to lifting the heavy range..using both of these jacks you should be able to safely replace a wheel on the side of the road for instance.. ... - .- -.

I've just had to use the Land Rover supplied scissor jack as I had a puncture, it collapsed!! Luckily the wheel was still on the car when it happened.

I'd best invest in something more substantial.
