TD6 cut out

Hi all

Fairly new to the Range Rover experience. I bought an 06 TD6 from a friend a few months ago.
I know the previous three owners, so while it's cosmetically tired, it's mechanically sound and everything works.

Well, worked.
Last week, I noticed a distinct smell of diesel when walking past the engine bay. At the same time, it would need to crank for a couple of seconds before starting, where as before it would start almost instantly.
Then, on Saturday morning, it cut out after about 5 minutes of driving.
I was rescued, and then trailered it back. It started and ran so I could drive it on and back off the trailer, so it's safe and I can work out what is going on.

A preliminary investigation hasn't yielded much. There is no obvious leak anywhere.
I would have expected a significant amount of diesel somewhere, as the smell was quite strong.

What I did notice is that there was a lot of air getting in the clear pipe from the fuel filter to the high pressure pump. Is this normal?

I decided to replace the fuel filter as it appears to be quite old.
Having done that, I'm not able to get any fuel from the feed line to the fuel filter. One of the pumps is working as there's a lot of air coming out, but no diesel.

Any ideas or suggestions appreciated.

Had a small similar leak in that clear pipe. Leak was at the end of the pipe where it pushes on to whatever it connects to and garage was able to just cut an inch off the end of the pipe and push it back on. I understand that a sprinkling of talcum powder is quite good for identifying where a leak is coming from.

OK, thanks. I like the talcum powder idea, I'll give that a go.

I think I have a bigger problem, with no fuel coming out of the feed pipe to the fuel filter, so will need to resolve that first.
