Bleed Screw Fix? - PTFE Teflon Tape (Coolant Loss)

The issues in this post are covered in another, longer, recent thread http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic21351.html but the purpose of this post is to focus on a simple solution relevant to some cases of coolant loss:

Having spent the best part of a week trying to stabilise coolant loss coming from the black cross head bleed screw on the expansion tank (Image 1) and having seen a previous post which commented that a defective bleed screw can result in there being a need for a replacement expansion tank http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic9849.h...leed+screw , despite the fact that ours is all under warranty, a simple, cost effective and efficient remedy does exist in the form of:
Plumbers PTFE Teflon tape (Image 3)

In our case the expansion tank and the bleed screw (Image 2) are as new. However, it appears that there was no actual rubber o-ring on the bleed screw. The bleed screw had a tendency to shift & need constant adjustment to tighten (close) because of the hot and cold expansion and contraction of the plastic expansion tank through normal use of the car.

The solution in our case was to carefully wrap a reasonable amount of PTFE tape around the thread of the bleed screw, taking care not to then overtighten the bleed screw so as to avoid damage to the bleed screw and/ or the screw hole that sits on the top of the expansion tank.

3 days on since using the PTFE tape and the problem is completely solved. Thumbs Up

hi
just thought id mention something relating to the coolant loss issue,,not going off the subject but last week my vogue went into the dealership for a compressor leak test of which it failed because of the seal kit issue that i started a post about on here but however whilst there they looked under the bonnet and drained my antifreeze and replaced it ,because they said it was the WRONG color,it should be BLUE and not PINK,as the pink one cannot match the high end scale of the temperature the l322 run at,,they done that ,flush the system and bled it free of charge for me, as i had to wait around before i got seen, just thought id mention it as in your picture the coolant in the expansion tank is pink,i know you have another model to the l322 but maybe its something you might need to look into.. i was totally unaware of the pink or blue issue but they pointed it out to me and done it FREE of charge so there was nothing in it for them to gain, don't know if this varies between dealership but i left a happy bunny.. Very Happy steve

Hi Steve, thanks for the info. Input from learned professionals and enthusiasts on this forum is overwhelmingly that the colour should be pink/ orange; and the main dealer I use (Stratstone) also use this colour of coolant. The picture of the organic coolant on the linked post is of a bottle that Stratstone gave me. For our SC, the pictured coolant is correct.

Cheers Thumbs Up

Steve, I do hope you have got confused with your colours... Pink is the colour for all L322 RR's fact... If someone has removed yours and replaced it with blue then you need to march straight back down there and have them reverse it as Blue will eat away seals, gaskets etc Shocked

Google it Thumbs Up

^^^+1 Recommended coolant for all L322's is 50% mix Havoline XLC and water which is orange.
You definitely do not want a Blue Coolant mix.

Laughing i'm confused now...so am i right to believe that the coolant which was replaced by my local dealership in my l322 2005 vogue which is now blue is the correct coolant ... ??? i understand that over time my vogue has got older and at this time of its life being older it should be changed to blue from pink...sorry for hijacking your thread pld118,looks like this is a confusing issue..

Just got a top up litre for mine from MD.

2006 4.4 V8 Jag engined car = pink - same as S/C.

Could it be the blue is for Td6 and BMW 4.4 V8 engine cars ?

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

I think the major issue is if you mix different colours.

Sludge forms and causes overheating.
