Brake Squeal - The Cure?

Right,

Sick of it, no matter how 'not too bad it is'. The pads are genuine LR and don't need replaced. Copper grease hasn't stopped it. Blowing the brake dust out with compressed air hasn't completely eradicated it either.

So, have just bought this from ECP and the question is... Will it or won't it and if so, for how long!

" Pagid CeraTec Brake Lube 75ml (GREASE)

Pagid Cera Tec is a specially formulated Brake lubricant for assembly of pads, calipers, discs and wheels bolts.
0% Copper content ensure no interferance with ABS sensors
Non Stick compound wont pick up dirt
Easy to use 75ml Tube "

One of the main reasons for brake squeal is hot gas (air) trapped between the pad surface and the disc itself, this whistles as it come out the sides of the pad, that's why it's worse under light braking and better when you stand on the brakes...

One way to prevent this is to drill a 10mm hole right through the center of the brake pad, through the whole pad and the backing, this lets the gas out and has eradicated it on cars I've owned in the past... another method is to grind a slot across the pad face about 3/4 of the way down the friction material....

I know everyone harps on about only using genuine parts and I tend to agree but I do have to say the drilled and slotted "cheapies" I put on mine are as quiet as a mouse... no gas build up as it has somewhere to go....

I suppose the grease may help a bit but I wouldn't hold my breath.... Thumbs Up Pete

SWMBO's Aston does this quite a lot, mainly because she never really gives it the beans. An "Italian Tune Up" with plenty of hard braking sends the squeal packing for several weeks. Massive brake pads tend to glaze over if not used hard occasionally.

I put that on mine and they still squeal a bit, they are better on a longer run with some heavy braking though as Dom says. It is a feature, and seems to be more of a problem on my car now they are fitted with the 6 pot callipers than it was with the 4 pot ones on the old car. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Cheers all.

Took both wheels off this afternoon, degreased the pads, drilled a hole in the middle (couldn't penetrate the metal backing plate though), hacksawed a fine groove on the pads 3/4 way down and put lots of the Cera Tec lube on the backing and around the edges instead if grease ... and so far so good (not a peep!).

Thumbs Up

I scuff my discs with 40 grit everytime the wheels are off when the FF gets its once a month "deep" clean, seems to help dissipate the hot air and stop the discs glazing over, was taught it as an apprentice and it works fine. '55 Java Black Vogue

I put drilled and grooves on my old FF and the squeel went, My current FF had brand new brakes all round just before I got it so I'm being a tight yorkshireman and getting some life out of them before I change, I'll live with the squeel for now and carry on annoying other motorists when I pull up next to them Laughing Current

Still not a peep... Think it was the quality of the 'tradesman' who put into practice all that was learned during the anti squeal research Laughing

Schhhh...

For the record, I have drilled discs on front, and they squeal. I reset them with some rubbery disc squeal compound, but it came back. Thank goodness the discs are worn out, so I can get some solid ones, and fit the new pads I have waiting. I've never got on with the drilled ones.
Only reservation, is hard braking on motorway, makes a vibration through the pedal, from the holes etc. Maybe gas etc.
Sometimes I have fitted pads, and then refitted them a thousand miles on because of squeal, when hot. Normally with copper grease, quite liberally.

There's always one... Rolling Eyes

On old ones like ours John it's usually slack pads in the calipers, the caliper wears and the pad can move around a lot, well that's my theory.....

I know what you mean about the vibration when braking hard but boy are these much better than the standard ones.... mine are now on par with the Brembo's on the later FF's.... Pete

It could be all down to the way I myself, fit pads. However, my drilled discs and pads were on the car at purchase, and were squealing, and two goes and it came back. I'm not saying they are no good,(drilled) but I have had more than a few 'squeaky-bum' hard brakings, to wonder if the less contact area, meant slightly less effectiveness. (Using my man science)
I would understand their benefit during off roading/wading, and long hill descents, so I wouldn't dismiss them, but kind of swinging to standard.....this time.
