I’m in the VIN range and have had them checked, all Ok, and on that basis would probably be covered if they did go.

I’m working on the assumption that LR won’t change them as a matter of course if there is no cracking so for safety sake I have looked into prices. They seem to be about £650+vat a side for the bit….. a couple of hours on that for fitting. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I would get LR to change them both.

I took mine in (as it's in the VIN range) and one was visibly cracked. They changed both anyway.

I don't think this is the case, I was told by a normally very reliable JLR gossip that the problem was with clearly identified batches of parts. from this some VIN numbers WOULD have the suspect parts fitted, some VIN numbers would NOT have the parts fitted and some MIGHT have the parts fitted. He reckoned that the "inspection" involved confirming which parts were fitted to any given car, the suspect parts would be changed and the others would be checked and changed if required.
This seemed to be the case as he told me just from the VIN that my 2014 car would get both sides changed and this was the case even though there were no signs of cracking.

Totally correct, there is a production batch code etched into the knuckle, if it falls within the known bad batch they get replaced.

Batch numbers are higher than those listed in the bulletin...

From my reading of the bulletin, both of these should be replaced FOC under warranty. Let's see what happens

I can see this running and running!! I had both replaced as 'goodwill' on my MY2016 as outside of vin and batch. I also had a free o/s/f driveshaft as the MD managed to destroy it on removal (and their special tool). All in, a win for once!

There are no recalls or service actions against the VIN number, so there is nothing for the dealership to claim against...

That's disappointing, it begs the question as to how they authorised mine as it was the same scenario. I didn't need to even argue, JLR CRC just came back to me and said we've instructed the dealer to complete the works as goodwill??

Seeing as we are seeing more and more of these on newer L405's than the recall - it begs the question that if you have them replaced is it simply a matter of time before the problem happens again?

From watching Christian and Vera on LR Time, who have just had theirs replaced, he noted the design/casting is different, so probably not. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Equally, it could be the composition of the material which is different, or a change to the manufacturing process, or a combination of factors, but we will likely never know. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

When I observed the design/casting differences,

I wrote to Christian to show him the differences, and that they could confirm. You have my photos in the post.

But I haven't found the new casting yet even on MY18/19...

People who have the latest l405 MY22 should look at their knuckles.

I bought a replacement knuckle out of my own pocket and had it installed. The dealer im working with says they still dont have parts to fix units in the recall. From what I was told they will have a new design/casting to them. Dealer told me to keep old part as it will need to go back for inspection and my recently installed knuckle will be replaced with newer style.

JLR NA says they were sending letters out on Jan 3 2025, I havent received one as of yet and Im in the Production and VIN range.
