Adblue DEF overhaul

Although I didn’t have any dash warnings, Carly OBD showed an issue about DEF quality.
So this morning I overhauled the system, and boy it needed it. It’s
just a 20min job to clean the injector and the housing. An easy win as it should really improve the soot & nox levels now it’s actually squirting freely. Whilst under there I drained the old pigs Censored and put new in. Mmmmm, farm-yard fresh now😝. I’ve got a 120mile round trip tomorrow so let’s see …..

Ha ha well spotted, yeah it’s my sons. I like to have a blat in it when I can, it’s a good laugh, like a roller skate. Yeah the white stuff is crystallised adblue. Toothbrush dipped in vinegar removed it easily

So a Disappointing test drive result. I first got the insufficient reductant quality error , cleared that and then got the dreaded no engine restarts countdown. I didn’t have either in the dash before 😩
Going back, When I did the injector clean/tank drain I refilled with just 5L of adBLUE, and then got these various errors. Was that far too little? So I put another 5L in and it’s made no difference to the capacity reading, it still thinks there’s only 450 miles in the tank, which correspondence with the Dosing error with countdown of 450 miles.
i don’t know if this is directly related, is it a tank level reading error? Or something else going on.

The handbook does say
The check engine amber warning lamp may illuminate after a refill. In this event, start the engine, run for approximately 30 seconds, and then switch off the engine. Do this three times in succession. 2018 SE SDV8 4.4 Byron Blue

Was the system primed correctly following reassembly? There is a prime and pressure test routine that should be run.

The DEF quality error is generated where the reduction in NOX levels is not as expected for the quantity of AdBlue requested to be injected, could be caused by poor quality fluid, blocked injector, pipe blockage, pump fault, catalyst failure or sensor fault amongst others.
Need the actual fault codes to be more precise.

Thanks that’s useful to try out. I did take it for two decent runs but I can’t recall if I started three times. But when I get back I’ll try that three times for perhaps 30 seconds each. I though I was mitigating this kind of nonsense by draining and refilling without powering anything up but who knows, eh?!

Thanks. No, I didn’t know about priming and pressure testing and I don’t have a GAP tool to do it so this could be it. The injector is perfectly clean, the fluid is correct spec and fresh. I’m hoping it’s not the other issues you mention as it was working before, well I didn’t have dash errors so assuming so.
Maybe you can answer this if poss, I first filled up with 5L and it showed 500m range on the service menu, I put another 5L in and it stayed at 500m …. Why??

Because there is a fault in the system. Needs a reset, or codes read at a minimum Thumbs Up

As Mikey says you need to reset the system.

Recently had the same on mine, bad DEF error, drained the tank refilled then got threatened with lock out.

It requires the system to be primed and tested. Have a read… it’s not something you can do manually, I bought a diagnostic tool and reset it myself, took mins. Most garages should be able to do it for you if they have a decent OBD tool.

Thanks for your post link northernmonkeyjones, really interesting stuff. When I got the error I did pop over to my local LR indy and they tried to do a reset with their snap-on but it didn’t clear it off the dash, they said it needs to be driven a few times, so I did two 75mph runs for 15m each but didn’t work.

I since found a LR bulletin SSM73330 (some extracts below) and will try out the drive sequence they describe. I don’t know if my car has the patch which would be applicable for my VIN, or if the soot is below 6g though.


Last question, on the Autel: there is a cheap’n’chearful MD806 Pro model on a Black Friday deal. I can’t tell if this can do all the DEF stuff yours can. I sent them a question but got no reply. What do you think, can you tell?

From what I could see Mikey I have to agree, it didn’t appear to have the ability to do, for example, pump priming or force a spray.

I’d love to buy the GAP but it’s so expensive. Autel get some good reviews for JLR but which is the cheapest model for SCR DEF stuff? I’ve downloaded manuals for their most expensive models and can’t see SCR anywhere but it must be in there as I’ve seen threads, so it makes it difficult to ascertain the functionality on the cheaper models
