@Gremlin500: What I meant was that are there any members around that knew they had completely intact/sound knuckles in the first place without any visible damage after becoming aware of this feature, but noticed them failing later on. It is a fault which you have to look out for, until the part fails completely. Based on the posts in this thread the failures seem to have happened ”under cover” over time.

I was after replies like @4RRS

I still have 9 months left of my 3rd party warranty so I am trying to anticipate what could/should fail next on my TDV6 with 125k miles. (Don’t even mention the crankshaft or the bearings Twisted Evil ).

OK thank you just meaning to clarify things, @4RRS you say “in minute detail” but was that with a proper crack testing kit, or just visual? It’s important to qualify these things when death can be the result. The dye penetrant and reactive indicator can reveal microscpic detail absolutely invisible to the human eye, in a night-and-day difference kind of way.

If you own an L405, you 100% need to own & use this kit regularly.

Sorry, i should have been clearer, I carried out the N759 recall as per the v2. JLR document and found no cracks at the time. L405 SV Autobiography LWB SDV8, finished in Aston Martin China Grey by ETO division.

Hmmmmm, makes you wonder exactly how JLR Dealers check the knuckles?

I’d lay odds on it’s just a visual check, -anyone know the answer? Whistle

Anyone notice if the joints were sparkly clean after a JLR “inspection”? Any sign of dye overspray?

I’d rather do it myself so I know it’s been done properly, for peace of mind.

I guess burying my head in the sand "safe" in the knowledge that my car was not in the affected VIN range and was too old ('63) is not enough anymore if '13's are now turning up with cracks! Big Cry

NDT kit ordered and on it's way! Rolling Eyes

Living out in the sticks means recovery would not be easy!

On a lighter note, can I nag everyone about ALWAYS wearing eye protection when using a wire brush (including handheld) you don’t want even a tiny bit of wire embedded in your eyeball, or your skin for that matter, so wear some tough gloves when prepping for the test!

Has anyone had the “retaining bracket” fix applied as part of the recall? I’m keen to see how this is meant to prevent catastrophic failure.

2017MY. I ve had a call with the dealer and he told me that “it’s an aluminium part and aluminium parts break. It’s normal…” I tried to keep calm…. If i try to push the dealer for a repair, it’s definitely gonna take time and i cant have the car stationary for weeks. I ‘ve already ordered the part and hopefully i will receive it today to replace the broken knuckle. However, i will let them know and will also do the test for the left one which has no visible signs.

Have we seen any replaced knuckles fail?
I have had mine done as part of the recall and am trying to decide if I need to monitor the new ones regularly...

I don’t think so as yet, but nothing wrong with keeping an eye on them.

It’s random how the originals fail some do, some dont. Mine are original and still in Minty fresh condition. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

@ChrisJC:

These knuckles are all now made by SAI in Taiwan since 2014, including the “affected” batches.

(The company is generally known as an alloy wheel manufacturer).

The opportunity for further defective castings persists.

It’s very cheap, quick, and easy to do a DIY periodic, (6-monthly) penetrative dye crack test for peace of mind, which is what I’m doing on our MY2017, even though it’s apparently not in the affected range.

There are reports of 2017 and possibly even 2018, vehicles being affected, depending on who you believe on the internet……….. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

17MY, that was through our own workshop, and only picked up as the car was in for a service

Have seen pictures of, but not personally seen, 19/20MY still failing...
