Universal Wheel bearing removal kits - word of warning

I am changing all four wheel bearings and decided to get one of thee kits from Amazon to help remove/fit the bearings.

Good kit and a clever little concept if you don't have access to a machine shop press. The kit is designed to push the bearings out into a "sleeve" and the kit contains different sized sleeves to suit different sized bearings to receive the bearings when they are pushed out. It also has different sized discs to do the "pushing". The "pushing" discs are fine and there is a vast arrange of sizes however the issue is the "sleeves" of which there is just a choice of four different sizes and none of the "sleeves" are suitable for the L322 bearing as the bearing is around 96mm in diameter and the largest "sleeve" in the kit frustratingly has an internal diameter of around 93mm!!! Only slightly too small but small enough to mean it won't work as the sleeve is incapable of receiving the bearing as it is being squeezed out......it ain't going to work on the L322 bearings!

I am getting a mate to make me a sleeve in his work shop with an internal diameter of 100mm to allow me to use the kit and I am confident it will work but just a word of warning to any member considering purchasing one of these kits to sort out their wheel bearings.

Can the thread apply enough force to push out a bearing this size? 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

I concur, last one I changed took just under 20 tons to get it out, I doubt the threads on that kit will apply that much force.. Hope it does for you though... Thumbs Up Pete

I'll find out when I get the new sleeve made up but I think it will. The bearing was moving out until it reached the lip of the sleeve and then it wouldn't go any further due the bearing not being small enough to fit into the sleeve.

I had the hub in a vice and was using a 2ft breakers bar to turn the nut.

Good tip, also there are kits with more pieces that could fit, but they will also be more expensive Big Cry
A tip for those without a bearing press
When fitting the new bearing into the knuckle, the day before put the new bearing into the freezer and if possible heat up the knuckle with ie boiling water, you will be amazed at how easy it is to fit the bearing, standard practice at at sea ( On a huge variety of machinery) very often the bearings fit in by hand, let the knuckle cool / bearing warm up and bingo, you have a nice interference fit - Just check all sizes of components first Thumbs Up

I can't put my bearing in the freezer for fear that my Mrs will come across it and end up cooking it!

The machine shop lads knocked me up a cracking sleeve with some 100mm internal diameter steel pipe and a nice lid.

Worked a treat.....both bearings out.

Now let's see how it copes with putting some new ones back in.

That's probably as good if not better quality than the original kit parts Thumbs Up We make push / pull parts at sea from steel pipe all the time.
Mark the part and keep it with the kit, you can then say the kit is for FFRR's if you sell it Whistle Rolling with laughter

Yes it is quality....better than what is supplied in the kit.

Before sinking the new bearings into the knuckle I am trying to find out if there is a certain way they need to be fitted......maybe to do with the ABS sensor? I have started a new thread to try and find out.

The overall height including lid is 75mm and the outside diameter is 115mm the important internal diameter is 100mm so that is can accommodate the bearing that is being pushed out.
