Managed to make some progress tonight…

The new variators, chains, guides, tensioners, and bolts all fitted and torqued to spec.

After that was done the pins were pulled on the tensioners - they go off like bullets when the pins are pulled!

The cam sprockets were then pulled to 35nm using the special tool to put everything under tension and then the variators were then torqued too.







Pretty much at the point of starting reassembly tomorrow after a bit more cleaning up!

It’s all been pretty straight forward so far.

The biggest delays have been ordering and waiting for parts and tools.

It’s just cleaning and reassembly now. Unfortunately, I’m away this weekend so the car will need to wait which is irritating.

Hi I’m sure I read somewhere that after you release the tensioner pins you should lever the guide to make sure that they have clicked in place and they said quite a bit of force is needed but obviously do your homework on this advice perhaps its to do with the oil pressure

That’s right.

I used a big flat blade screwdriver between the tensioner and the guide just to make sure the tensioner was holding it as tight as it could. I heard a click from the tensioner on each side as it extended another tooth on the ratchet.

One step forwards… 2 steps back!

I was looking for something in the parts catalogue earlier today and in the section that shows the camshafts which I hadn’t looked in before, it also shows a filter in the end of each camshaft that sits in the flow of oil from the cams to the VVT variators.

Seeing as there was some sludge on a couple of the bolts attaching the variators to the cams, I’ve decided that I’m going to remove the timing gear and replace the 4 filters before going any further.

I reckon it’ll probably be 1.5hrs work to undo it, change the filters and reassemble back to where I am now so probably worth it in the long run as I don’t want to have to strip it down again.

The timing gear is all removed and the filters fished out of the end of the camshafts.





They are dirty but not as dirty as I was expecting them to be. Hopefully the new ones arrive tomorrow and we can start rebuilding it again.

Thankfully, I reckon it was only about 20-25 mins work to get it stripped back down.

The supercharger is on it’s way back from Powerhouse as of this afternoon too.

Nice shiny delivery from Powerhouse arrived back today Smile











The filters for the cams arrived from Duckworths too so I can make a right good start at getting this back together now.

The only thing I’m waiting on now is the tool to align the front cover. I’ve not been able to find it online anywhere other than from Bosch Automotive who retail the genuine JLR tools. I ordered them a week ago after I opened an account online, it’s taken them a week to approve my account despite it not being a credit account and I’ve paid for the tools up front which is really annoying. I’m just hoping they dispatch them tomorrow now.

I‘ve now changed the filters in the camshafts and have refitted the chains, guides, tensioners, etc. The engine is all timed properly, has been spun over and the timing checked so we’re ready for reassembly now.

Delivery arrived from Germany today.

First up we’ve got the tool to align the camshaft covers:





Second up we’ve got the tool to fit the front cover:





Just need to try and find the time to get going with it again now!

Managed to get a couple of hours on this between last night and tonight.

This is the tool to align the valve covers. It’s actually very handy, just dropping the valve cover on with that tool in place see all the bolt holes lined up instantly rather then having to manipulate it and disturb the silicon that you need to use.





The upper covers were then refitted along with the VVT solenoids and cam sensors.





The valve covers were also installed last night.





I wanted to get as much done last night as I could as there’s been a real change in the weather so I wanted it covered up before any dampness got onto the cams.

Then tonight I torque the crankshaft pulley bolt. The manual states this goes to 200NM + 270 degrees.





Did the 200NM with the torque wrench, then swapped to the 3/4” 4ft bar. I marked the socket at the 9 o’clock position and tightened it until it had done 3/4 of a turn and was vertical at the 12 o’clock position. That was TIGHT!

Now the engine is pretty much covered up again I can get on with giving everything else around the engine a good clean now. I didn’t want to risk getting muck and crap into the engine via an you of the open covers.

Should be a fairly easy re-assembly from here now.
