Not at all Laughing

The supercharger on the 5.0 is back to front compared to the 4.2. The case bearings are in the middle with the rotor pack gears being on the back. To get into it you need a special puller to remove the spindle in the middle. That’s not really an issue, I could make something to do that.

However, the case bearings need a special tool to remove them from a blind hole. The bearings also need setting about 1mm below the case when installing.

Rather than spending ages making tools, I just thought I’d send this one to Powerhouse in Chesterfield to save time.

In the meantime, I’ve spent this evening cleaning valves.

Before:

After:

That was done using some brass wire brushes, a pick and injector cleaner.

After I’d taken that photo I got the straight pick and gently worked away at the side of the valve. It’s taking me approx 30 mins per cylinder to work it clean at the moment.

I’ve done all of the passengers side bank tonight. I’ll have a go at the other side tomorrow evening.

On my 4.2 RR I replaced the bearings in the auxiliary idlers. When I pressed them out they were 6203-2RSH which I could source without any problems.

I decided I was going to do the same with the 5.0 as although not bad, they’re not like new. The bearings in the 5.0 are marked up as 6203LAX30.

The originals in both cars were made by NTN.

I cannot find much reference to what the LAX30 on the new ones means though. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

The tools to remove the crankshaft pulley arrived today.

You remove 2 of the 6 bolts that hold the two halves of the crankshaft pulley together and bolt the big metal arm in place. Then you use the removable part of an axle stand between the subframe and the tool to support it. The socket in the kit is a 3/4” one that I put a 4 foot bar on and heaved. This bolt gets tightened to 200Nm + 270 degrees! After about 1.5 turns the bolt became loose enough to undo by hand.

After that you screw a big threaded rod down into the crank, you then screw the adapter down the rod, install the bearing on the top and then bolt the adapter plate into the front of the pulley using the 4 bolts that were included.

Then using a 10mm spanner to hold the threaded rod, you use a 24mm spanner to undo the centre section and wind the crankshaft pulley off. It came off nice and easily with little resistance.

After that, all the 10mm bolts were removed and the front cover was removed to expose the rest of the timing gear. On the 4.2 the entire front of the engine comes off so access is much easier rather than via the portholes on the 5.0.

I then removed the crankshaft sensor and the starter motor so that it can all be locked up tomorrow when the timing tools arrive.

Irritatingly, when undoing the small 8mm nut from the starter motor it has sheered the solenoid stud clean off the starter flush with the casing. The starter is dated 2016 so it’s obviously been changed with the car being a 2012. I can only assume it was put on by an absolute gorilla. So… it looks like I need a starter motor now. 😩 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Looking good David yes afraid there is always at least one who thinks every bolt and cap needs to be put on as tight as possible - today my eldest tore the cap off the petrol tank on the outboard because some numbskull had graunched it on so need a new plastic fuel tank.
At least if you put on a new starter one less thing to do in the future Thumbs Up

Yup, the vacuum pump is coming off to have a new gasket put behind it whilst it’s in bits.

I think the leak has actually been from the front cover at the bottom left corner as you look at it rather than the vacuum pump. The oil cooler is also getting a new gasket too. Not leaving anything to chance Smile

LAX, aside from being a terrible airport, is likely to be some specific automotive spec. Possibly angular, bigger balls or some non-standard size. Do the outside measurements match the stock 6203 dimensions? If you know you're going to replace them anyway then I'd cut one open to see what's in there. If it looks like a normal bearing then I'd replace it with a high quality, high speed one. Apologies if this is teaching you to suck eggs! Have you tried contacting NTN directly to find out what this code is? I've done this before with other things and generally found with a little perseverance and asking nicely you can get a long way in answering obscure questions, even from large, faceless corporations.

I spoke briefly to bearing boys who reckoned it was a batch code or something similar.

The dimensions are exactly the same as the SKF 6203-2RSH bearings that I fitted to the 4.2 3 years ago so I’ve ordered 4 of them for this one.

https://www.bearing-king.co.uk/bearing/620...-wide/4225

Good thought about contacting NTN, I’ll try and get in touch with them.

When Googling it I can find one website that used to sell them before they went out of stock but nothing anywhere tells you what they are.

Will report back if I find anything Smile

After doing some shopping around for a starter motor, I found this on eBay:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/313923360216?mk...media=COPY

I thought it was suspiciously cheap so I did some Googling and gave the company a call.

Apparently JLR had issues with starters so had waaaay to many of them. When JLR were getting rid of them they bought a ton of them so were able to supply them at great prices.

I ordered it at 13:00 on Friday and it was delivered at 18:30 yesterday (Saturday).

Great service and rapid shipping. Can’t thank DPD enough for that one!

The timing tools arrived too!

I also changed the bearings in the metal auxiliary belt pulleys last night. 3 of them were done successfully with no problems at all, however, the last pulley I did was a sod. The bearing was seized in the pulley and after trying to remove the pulley in the vice, the pulley bent.

Looks like another order to Duckworths! 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Today, as the timing tools had arrived I rotated the engine over and pinned the flywheel using the tool that goes in the position of the crankshaft sensor.

The timing guides that the tensioners operate on had the usual signs of wear but nowhere near what I was expecting given the slack that was in the chain on bank A.

I’ve not compared the new and old chains to see if there’s a difference in length yet.

Unfortunately one of the camshaft variators has been quite badly chewed due to the slack in the chains.

I had bought both oil squirters to replace whilst I was in there. I thought at the time I was going a bit OTT, however, I’m glad I did as when I removed the old one, it became apparent it had been clobbered by the chain and wasn’t giving any oil to one of the chains as it was blocked.

Here’s the whole thing:

The good one:

The battered one:

I changed the oil cooler gasket in the middle of the Vee this evening too so that’s one job off the to do list!

My folks are going away for a few days tomorrow so are dropping my supercharger off with Powerhouse on Tuesday so that it can be rebuilt.

I’m going to replace all 4 cam variators whilst I’m in here as they’ve all got some marks on them and a couple of the bolts that came out of them were a bit sludgy.

I bought the auxiliary chain, guide and tensioner for the 3rd chain that runs the oil pump and the shaft that drives both of the fuel pumps. Having looked at the workshop manual and checked the condition of this one I’m not going to change it. To get to that one means removing the engine from the car and then dropping the sump. That one can stay as it is for now as there’s no slack in that chain and the spring on the tensioner is still intact.

With all the timing chain stuff, the cooling system parts, the supercharger rebuild and 4 cam variators I’m going to be sitting with a total of around £3k in parts by the time it’s finished.

Everything needed to do the timing chains has now arrived from Duckworth’s.

There’s about £2,700 sitting on that sheet of plywood. Hoping to start rebuilding the car tomorrow now.

Powerhouse have stripped and inspected the supercharger, the bearings on it aren’t bad but the snout bearings are making a little noise and there’s a little play in the case bearings. They said that they would do the snout bearings and the coupler but the case bearings could be left alone. I’ve decided that it’s not worth messing around with so I’ve asked them to go ahead and do a full rebuild on it. It should be ready to be shipped back by the end of next week.

Those camshaft dephasers are quite bad, I'd like to say it's because of the lack of oil feed - but it could be just as well caused by the chain stretch, which may have been made worse by the lack of oil feed - but only slightly.
I've been replacing a lot of (non-JLR) timing chains recently, most have been proved to be as a result of wrong specification oil, the others were taxis...

What surprised me is the sprocket that sits on the crankshaft is totally unmarked and looks like new.

It’s only one of the variators that has marks on it from the chain and it’s that bank that was flagging the EML and restricted performance. I’m not taking a risk though and have got 4 replacements to go on.

I compared the one of the new chains with the old ones last night and the old one are definitely stretched, they’re approx 1/3 - 1/2 a link longer when sat side by side.

Had a good look at things as I started to plan my rebuild on Saturday and decided that I didn't want to use the original crankshaft sprocket. Although you couldn't feel any marks on it, you could see them when looking at it in daylight.

All of the kits online come with this sprocket so I ordered it yesterday. It was out of stock and was going on back order, however, thankfully Duckworth Land Rover had the only one in the UK so it should be here today.

I did change a few coolant seals, the cross over pipe, PCV valves, and gave a few things a bit of a clean but I'm not hoping that the proper rebuild can begin tonight.
