4.4 tdv8 started smoking.

I know some cars need the oil drain mod and some don't.
My engine has never smoked when the second turbo cuts in.
Today I had a sound similar to a stone being rattled in a tin can and then a puff of smoke from the exhaust.
Every time I rev past 2000 now there is a large plume of smoke from the exhausts.
Normal driving below that there is nothing. Revving to 4000 revs when stationary there is nothing.
I'm baffled by the noise it made.
Sometimes when the engine is idling there has been a strange suction gurgling noise from the second air filter inlet on the front wing.
It has had the revised CSOV actuator.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yep, blue smoke is engine oil - the 'rattle' will have been uncontrolled combustion - AKA diesel knock
White smoke can be uncombusted diesel (leaking injector) or coolant leak into combustion or exhaust tract.
Black smoke is almost always excessive fuelling but mainly combusted (a really cheap remap or plug-in can cause this).
It's possible some sitting oil could have been dragged up through the charge air hoses - check the intercooler and inlet hoses, there will be oil misting which is normal, running oil isn't.

Thanks guys. When I've looked in the hoses in the past I would say they are definitely wet rather than just misted.
Phoenix, you mean the 'uncontrolled combustion' would have been from the influx of oil? I'm a bit worried it could turn into a 'runaway'.
Can someone confirm that the second turbo won't operate when the car is stationary but revved?
I'm sure I've read that on here somewhere.

It could well turn into a 'runaway' have you checked the oil level? If you have a DPF and there is excessive oil dilution it's possible the excess oil/fuel is making it's way into the induction tract, which, of course, is 'uncontrolled'.
Wet or misted charge air hoses is as much down to interpretation - if you take any hose off, there shouldn't be a stream of oil, a drip after some time, but not a stream, however thin. I have known a build-up of oil occur in the intercooler, usually due to 'low boost' driving not pulling it through to be burnt as intended, instead, it pools in the intercooler until there is enough to cause a temporary hydraulic lock - which is then sucked into the engine, usually with a perceptible preceding dip in engine speed for less than a second, followed by a combustion clatter. Once this excess oil is cleared, the vehicle will drive normally until the oil level rises again. The check is to remove the hoses at the bottom of the intercooler and dip a long cable tie in there although often there will be a stream of emulsified oil running out before you can get the cable tie in...

Blue smoke is oil being burnt / combusted in the cylinders so it’s getting there from the induction side - not good. White smoke is oil just vaporising in the exhaust from the turbo exhaust seals I.e ‘drain mod smoke’. Get the turbo’s checked as there shouldn’t be enough oil getting past the seals in normal operation to cause visible smoke 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

All good advice, Thankyou.
Will take the hoses off and have a look.
I've recently done an oil change and the level is one graduation bar down on the gauge with the engine warm. I always measure what comes out to make sure it is never overfilled.
The oil level stays constant between changes which I do every 3000 miles.
I'm just mystified as to why it's just started doing this.

It shouldn't be possible to have a runaway due to oil from the secondary turbo if the ignition has been switched off because the inlet isolation valve is closed with the ignition off, thereby closing off the gross supply of oil.

The engines have run away from a failed primary turbo though, which is why I've setup mine to close the EGR throttle butterfly for 15 seconds after switch-off.

It’s not been neglected with 3k Mile oil changes ! With the turbo outlet hoses off wiggle the turbo shafts to check for excessive play. There will be some as it’s a floating shaft / bearing. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

Well I decided to treat it to an 'Italian tune-up' as recommended by folks on here.
The first one might have had a small puff of smoke but nothing like yesterday.
All the other tries there was nothing at all.
When the weather improves I'm determined I'm going to find the location of the oil drain Mod to see if it has been done. I've looked in the past and couldn't locate it!!
I was initially worried about the rattle but Phoenix's explanation seems logical. I will also have a peek inside the hoses.
