Just out of interest, our 2006 passed it's MOT yesterday. Monitor advisories....Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (rear).
We like your welding and it looks like we will have to do the same soon. From new, £32K spent, about 2K pa.

Handbrake

"Rear Parking brake efficiency only just met. It would appear that the braking system requires adjustment or repair. (1.4.2 (a) (i))" ... was stated on the previous MOT back in November, so it was time to have a look at the Handbrake...

I was getting a squeak/squeal from the SC when slowing to a final stop. So, up on the jacks it went, wheels off and started to have a look.

Once the Calipers & Discs were removed it was pretty evident that the Handbrake Shoes had been Handbrake Shoes for too long... perhaps the originals at 81,000 miles ?

Borg and Beck kit had already been ordered from the excellent Advanced Factors so time to fit.

When I got the SC it had an additional camera fitted to the back alongside the dashcam mounted on the front windscreen. The original reversing camera didn't work anyway - it just showed a cloudy image on the screen. So it was time to remove the additional camera and look at fixing the existing one...

I stripped out the original ones - and now have a hole in the plastic cover so need a new one -

I used Wire Wool to gentle scrub the scum off with a little water to lubricate it. Then some fine Aerospace wool which has polish in it to buff them up - this was 'liberated' from Monarch Aircraft Engineering many, many moons ago.

....and added this which I found after I ordered it '3 L322's ago'

Polishing the exhaust tips makes a big difference to the appearance of the car IMO.

I always use Solvol AutoSol which brings them to a lovely finish.

Nice thread, some good work going on there, you will have a very nice fatty when your done.... trouble is you are never "done" with a fatty, that's why we love them...

Popped off to Kwik Fit for a pressure test (free) as my air con just wasn't really cold at all.

I've used this centre in Stevenage before for my last few L322's when it comes to Air Con and again I've had good friendly service.

No leaks following a long pressure test so a refrigerant refill was carried out for £65. Ice Cold now so I'm happy - and cold.

After a search the issue is with the "Auxiliary Fan Air Conditioning Flap Sensor". A BMW part which fits E46, X5, E53, X3, E83, Z4, E85 Beemers. I purchased a second hand one from the Bay which was guaranteed for £18 -

That's interesting to see where that box should be mounted to as mine was tucked up behind the power steering reservoir when I got the car and I've never really spent much time looking to see where it goes!

Once the fan cowl goes back in I can reattach it properly now

I wanted to know exactly what it did... so after a bit of Googling ... it appears its pretty important to stop overheating if the fan doesn't come on and the car's stationary ...

Automatic recirculated air control (AUC) is an additional feature controlling the automatic operation of recirculated air. The AUC feature uses an oxidizable gas sensor usually mounted behind the right side of the radiator or the right side upper portion of the fan shroud (samples air quality as coolant fan pulls across the radiator). The AUC sensor contains a combined heating element (powered by the IHKA module) and a gas sensor. The gas sensor requires heating to work efficiently. The sensor produces a varying voltage based on air quality (concentration of hydrocarbons, NOX, SOX, and CO). The voltage increases as the air becomes more polluted. After it reaches a preset value, the IHKA closes the fresh air flaps. To prevent glass fogging, the system has built-in time limits: 3 minutes when heating and 12 minutes when cooling. With normal air quality, the AUC sensor reads about 0.5V. If the AUC sensor voltage increases to 3.0V, the ventilation or fresh air flaps will close (0%). At about 2.5V, the fresh flaps will read about 20% and 100% (fully open) at 2.4V.

So, after unearthing a sea of wires and scotch locks a few months ago I decided I'd bite the bullet and buy a new reversing camera from PowerfulUK. My L322 needed the earlier one so I placed an order on Wednesday morning and it arrived via DHL Thursday lunchtime.

There's plenty of videos out there as to how to get the old camera out but basically its -

1) Remove Plastic Cover over the rear window motor
2) Unplug the connectors for the camera and spoiler brake light
3) Undo the three 8mm bolts holding the spoiler in place and slide it towards the back then lift off
4) Remove the old camera & cables
5) Fit the new one and route the cables
6) Place the spoiler back on the tailgate and secure the grommets
7) Connect the Brake light and Camera connectors up
8 Screw it back down with the 8mm bolts
9) Replace the plastic cover
