England 2006 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.2 SC V8 Zambezi Silver

Hi all,

You may have seen my other thread https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic67608.html about the need to replace the Drivers CV boot and my questions around the Hub nuts/bolts and how to remove. Thanks to all for the pointers. Thumbs Up

Well, a little update. I've been soaking and working on the rust around the bolts/nuts for a few days this week and last night attacked them before the pub. The top one came out pretty easily by undoing the nut, leaving it at the end of the bolt length and then hitting it with a 2lb hammer. It just slide out. Took about 20 minutes all in. New nut and bolt in there temporarily.

The one below it... well its proving to be a little more resilient. I used all the same methods as the top bolt but I just can't get it too turn. I've even had a 6ft scaffold bar on it but it won't budge. Even tried a Snap-on Air gun to try and break the rust but again, nothing.

Today could be a long day.. and I've still got to remove the driveshaft... finger crossed that's not rusted in ... but I fear it will be.

Saturday and Sunday .... CV Boot on the Drivers Side changed.

Not a bad job once I got the bolt out with heat and a sledgehammer. Drive Shaft came out easily after a few taps wheel side with aa drift and on the CV Joint case from behind the Brake shield to ease it inwards. CV joint is in good order and running smoothly so wiped out the old grease and new grease put in. Genuine LR Boot back on the driveshaft which was then fitted with a new C clip on the shaft for the CV Joint side. Slid it on, tapped it home with a 'click' from the 'C' Clip engaging in the CV Joint, boot clips fitted and nipped up.

Both new Hub bolts fitted with lithium grease when inserted to aid the next person and the driveshaft splines also given a covering once I'd cleaned the grooves on each one and in the hub bearing. Popped it into the hub - first inch went in fine but it then need a generous amount of persuasion to fully engage with a section of tubing over the hub and the sledgehammer helping - it was very tight.

Nut is on and tight - I will torque it up fully when the road wheels are back on as it needs 420Nm / 311lb/ft. I have the Drop links and ARB bushes on both sides to do before I put the wheels on.

Not much to report lately other than another MOT passed yesterday.

Slight play in the offside front lower arm was the only real advisory other than a mist of oil on both diffs which I should've cleaned up and could now kick myself for not doing so.

I won't be buying FEBI Bilstein parts again... the arm has only been on there since June 2023 and less than 4,000 miles. It's developed a hole in the boot cover which has let in water and flushed out the grease.

Lemforder part ordered and will be fitted when it arrives - I'll also be taking a proper look at that boot cover Censored

New Lemforder front lower arm fitted over the weekend - replacing the FEBI failed item. All went well.

Serviced it too, a little early as not due until mid November and its only cover 4,000miles since the last one, but the weather was very mild so whilst I was there it was changed. As always I used Smith & Allan Momentum FSX 5W-30 and a Genuine LR Filter.

I've filled up my service book now so here's the link if anyone is interested in a FREE service booklet to carry on recorded services etc :

So, I've bitten the bullet and the SC is off to get all 5 wheels refurbished tomorrow. New Centre Caps also being colour coded.

They really need it and it's been on the to do list since I bought it.

All 5 alloys refurbished by https://www.autowiz.co.uk/ in Welwyn Garden City. Really happy with the work - they also colour coded the centre caps, new valves , balanced etc.

I asked around before using them and many friends have used them with excellent feedback so I took the plunge.

Dropped it off at 8am and collected it at 4pm.
