This is taken from a Wiki page on AGM batteries:

Advantages
All AGM batteries have enhancements over flooded lead acid batteries:
Purer lead in the plates, as each plate no longer needs to support its own weight, due to the sandwich construction with AGM matting. Traditional cells must support their own weight in the bath of acid.
Fluid retention - un-spillable
High specific power or power density, holding roughly 1.5x the AH capacity of flooded batteries due to purer lead[citation needed]
Low internal resistance allowing them to be charged and discharged quite rapidly
Water conservation - never requires addition of water
Acid encapsulation in the matting
Operation well below 0°F or -18 °C.
Availability of UL, DOT, CE, Coast Guard, and Mil-Spec approved types
Vibration resistance due to the sandwich construction.
[edit]

Disadvantages

Cost. AGM automobile batteries for example, are typically about twice the price of flooded-cell batteries in a given BCI size group.
AGM batteries have up to a 10 year lifespan, but must be sized to discharge less deeply than the traditional flooded batteries. For an AGM battery, the depth of discharge for optimal performance is 50% but flooded batteries can be rated up to 80% depth of discharge.

Yup - that lists the technical advantages over FLA... But only a few of them have a real world advantage for you - the end user. When was the last time you thought to yourself - hmmm, I really wish I had thicker lead plates in my battery so they were self supporting?
The dissadvantages impact significantly on "real world use"

I'm sat at dealers now getting them to look at the battery issues with our MY11 tdv8.

Will update later...

I thought it worth reminding peeps about the benefit of a Solar Charger plugged into the bootspace 12v socket and positioned in a rear window (no tints)

This will keep the battery nicely topped up at all times but ONLY the boot space 12v is live with ignition off.

Had a 'recoding' to stop the fans/blowers coming on randomly all the time. Will keep an eye out.

And erm, *ahem*, they didn't tell me there was an acknowledged problem and that once the software update was ready and the new batteries in better supply, they'll be doing a recall. No, they definitely didn't tell me that Wink

So now a £70k+ LR needs a £12.99 Solar Charger to keep it on the road Rolling with laughter

Sure this would go down well with the motoring press but as jez000 says it wont work on the 2011 MY vehicles so must pop off to the dealer to ask for an extention kit from one of the sockets that will Thumbs Up

Mine is plugged in at the moment in the boot of a 2008 TDV8 with the panel in the rear quarter light and I am really pleased with its simplicity and effectiveness!

Bargain of the year IMHO.

Are you saying you cannot plug a fridge into a 2011 car boot socket and then lock it to go for a walk and have your picnic and beer on return......

Surely not Question Confused Shocked

What a dreadful state of affairs that you have to rely on a solar charger or battery conditioner to enable you to start your £70k car. Time LR got their ars3 into gear abd sorted the problem out

You could never do that regardless because a range rover running a fridge would mean warm beer and no starting when you got back.. Laughing 2004 black Vogue TD6

It would be interesting to see what they do with the battery on the Holland & Holland edition, they seem to have bigger RSE screens, a fridge etc ... 2021 P400 Silicon Silver AB

I did same with a phone charge lead that has a red LED to show power supply. In the boot socket it continues to glow red after superlocking the 2008 model.

It would be good if another 2010/11 owners tried same and posted results?
