Braved it today & removed one of the sill covers, took my time & came off pretty well, no broken clips either. Slightly disappointed to see some surface rust at the end nearest the rear wheel. I made it worse than it was, I could see slight bubbling so decided to scrape away as much as possible. Kurust next followed by 2 coats of hammerite & a dose of Waxoyl for good measure. I've ordered some protective rubber as endorsed by NDFI in a past thread. T'other side tomorrow!

The vid by Matt is great Thumbs Up
However I've not keen on the break between the front and rear strips, better to have one continuous run.

Problem is there is a kink in the lip at 12 o'clock.

It's a sharp kink too, the rubber I bought would not conform, even with a good dose of heat.

So the holy grail is a rubber moulding strip that can deal with the kink - if anyone has any suggestions?

. Cheers, Greg

NDFI (nicedayforit) used these rubber trims on a previous thread, the seller he bought from is away until 1st March so I found the identical ones for £1 extra from another seller, but should be here midweek. Others on here have used them apparently & seem fairly pleased so I thought I'd chance it.

Hi Greg, could you cut out a shallow 'V' so it will bend inwards on the first kink then another 'V' so it can fold out on the other and fill the opened gap with some silicone adhesive?

United Kingdom 2009 Range Rover Autobiography 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue
Just copying my sill/arch rustproofing bit here

Copy from My dead TDV8 / turbo failure / moving onto a 4.2SC thread, to add to the info here:

With a bit of time free over the Christmas break I though I'd have a look at the sills and rear arches on the new 4.2SC, and rectify any defects found. As the vehicle is generally very rust free, I was hoping not to find too many horrors. So, up on jacks and off with the sill trims and rear arch liners:

NOTE: I jacked the rear of the vehicle on the towing armature and supported it on axle stands/wood block under the subframe bushes, with a safety under the towbar.

Once the sill trims were off it was clear that someone had been here before, with a waxy residue visible on the sill access holes - a good sign:

A look inside the sills with my wifi iPhone borescope camera (£15 well spent on eBay) revealed that the inside of the sills were in excellent condition with no rust, coated with a layer of light brown wax:

The rear arches did have a little light surface corrosion on the thin return flange, but were otherwise very good:

So, I attacked the surface rust with some emery cloth and soon found the steel beneath:

Whilst I was in there, I painted the brake disk centres with VHT silver as they were a bit tatty:

And then masked up and painted the sanded-down areas with rust-eater, then chassis black paint followed by Buckingham Blue topcoat and a couple of coats of clear laquer, before polishing:

I also painted the lower wishbones with rust-eater and chassis black to smarten them up, as they were a bit rusty:

It was then a case of waxing the sill cavities before reassembly, with 3M Cavity Wax Plus:

This in an excellent product with nozzles that spray the wax in a 360 degree fan due to the nozzle design. I also injected grease into other folds in the rear arch skins:

Before putting it all back together again. I added the extra rear arch lip rubber trims on the unprotected forward sections of the arch flanges as per the other threads on this subject, having got two LR001623 Freelander 2 'wheel arch protector water shield' rubber trims from Keith Gott's for £18. They didn't need much trimming to fit, just 1/4" off the end worked fine. I loaded them up with grease before installation. I also sprayed the inside of the arches with clear Waxoyl to protect this area:

So all in all a pleasant surprise in how free from corrosion my sills and rear arches were, as my old TDV8 was suffering badly in that department prior to its expiry. I'll inspect these areas annually to check condition and renew grease/wax protection, and be careful pressure washing the arches to avoid blasting out the grease on the arch lips.

*******

The Range Rover Owner's video is a good summary, nice find. I left the new forward trim short at the 12 o’clock position where the flange has a step, and just gave the small area still exposed a good coating of grease - looks neater. He also didn’t show cavity waxing the inside of the sills, which is also worth doing.

Correct parts numbers for clips:

1) Underside ones ANR2224. Loads on eBay. I mashed a few removing them. 12 in total for both sides. Buy a pack of 20.

2) Upper, vertical face ones. LR001959. https://www.advancedfactors.co.uk/exterior-side-clips-12644-c.asp

Buy a set of plastic trim removal tools. You’ll need them for leveraging the sill cover off. Don’t use a screwdriver! You’ll damage the paintwork.

The sill cover also has a screw on each end underneath that also need removing.

Mine does not have side steps or mudguards.

On the rear of the rear wheel arch liner? I saw that too. I didn’t remove my liner in the end. I removed all the small bolts to loosen the liner and was then able to pull the liner away to inspect behind it near the sill end. Cleaned with a dry brush and then brushed in some waxoyl by hand. I also hand waxoyled along the bottom of the wheel arch whilst pulling the plastic liner away from it if that makes sense.

There is also a foam block at the rear of each sill cover that slip off and can be dry brushed. You can then get to the end face of the sill to clean and waxoyl Thumbs Up

Foam block before removal:

Mike.

Thanks for that mate. Very good of you. Although mine is an Autobiography, it had no options put on it. Wonder how much it would cost for all the bits and pieces? Mmmm. Never had a car with TPMS. Google here I come.
