Well the FF is stripped down, bit of a learning curve figuring out what needs to come off and some tools needed that some may not have, namely the tiny 1/4" drive tore socket needed to remove the four screws that hold the front of the manifold in place. The engine cover locating posts screw on to two of these, quite clever.

Anyway the long and the short of it is one of the rubbers is split! Hopefully this is the cause of all my troubles! As everyone else's everything is oily and dirty. Will clean before re assembly.

Just an update, I have been doing ping pong emails with Patrick @ GAP over the last couple of days. Thanks to his fabulous IID tool and his knowledge I now have the tool set up as he recommended and it is at last picking up the fault for my restricted performance issue and it looks like it will be an air leak on the inlet after all. Be ripping the FF to bits tomorrow and trying to find the culprit.

What are the settings to achieve this? Ive had the restricted performance appear during a spirited overtake, it's cleared itself and there were no codes with IID tool.

AJGalaxy2012 I'm not even sure you need an IIDTool for this one, I'd check your hoses, they are known to do this, under the same circumstances (e.g. heavy acceleration /restricted / back to normal).

I believe there are newer, revised material hoses because of this.

Good luck! Thumbs Up Cheers, Greg

Note the fine split on stu's first pic.
Might not be apparent unless you remove the clips to have a good look...

Also worth checking that the plastic inlet manifold hasn’t split. This happened to my 4.4 TDV8 whilst in France 2 years ago. Same symptoms with reduced performance warning. The ID tool showed a temperature sensor fault, this was changed but the problem still remained. The French LR mechanic then found a crack in the manifold. This was replaced and the problem went away. 2019 L405 SDV8 Autobiography

Wow that's a lot of gunk. You get the same thing on the Volvo S60/V70 D5 engines, if the owner is not aware of this the gunk can virtually fill the bore of the pipe.

Steve.

Is this likely to be caused by hoses or something more sinister. It occurs when the pedal is down and the engine is working eg overtake, there is grey smoke in the mirror, almost looks like dust?

The smoke could be caused by the (lack of) Turbo Drain Mod. This won't throw up an error but it's main symptom is smoke when the second turbo spools up, which is above 2000rpm.

Suggest you take off the hoses and inspect carefully as this also won't throw up an error, will just give the restricted waring then go away again.

. Cheers, Greg

Today I had the chance to try and cause the limited performance to happen and Ive now repeated the same test twice.

Drive for 20 miles nice and steady, gentle acceleration etc. Then let rip on a dual carriageway feeding the throttle in down to the floor. Car following and I could see in the mirror considerable amounts of Blue Smoke (oil type smoke). On the second repeat of the above the exact same result but no restricted performance.

The smoke completely clears after about 50 seconds, you can slow down use kickdown and everything is good. Does it sound like it needs the drain mod doing? BMW i3 Electric Car

Mine was very similar to what you describe.
It always belched out a cloud of thick blue smoke every time I floored it to pass slower moving traffic, particularly lorries on motorways, but it didn’t trip into restricted performance.

Since I have had the mod done I haven’t seen a trace of smoke under any driving conditions, and when I took it for it’s MOT recently the tester did the smoke test twice which involved him revving the engine after it had been ticking over a while, but each time he got a zero reading.

Is this something an independent garage can do or best left to a main dealer? What sort of costs are involved parts and labour etc?

I do have a warranty from the seller so hopefully it will be ok. BMW i3 Electric Car

A couple of old posts suggest Independent ‘s quote around £1k to do the mod.
Personally I would try and find one who has done one before and fully understands what’s involved, even if it costs a little more. Mike.
