the oil drain mod is a bit different, it generally doesn't lead to clouds of smoke every time you floor it.

It is caused by positive pressure in the oil return line which causes oil to bleed past the seal when the engine is switched off.

so you have to have a large amount of unburned oil in the turbo to cause the smoke. if you drive round and never spool up the secondary turbo this will build every time you switch off the engine. I see it occasionally on mine when its been at the garage and the have switched it on and off to move it several times without driving it anywhere.

If you drive the car and use the secondary turbo on a regular basis then it doesnt cause too much of an issue. Ive not had the mod done on mine and it doesn't smoke at all.

I would be checking hoses and cleaning the intake sensors of gunk before taking the plunge and getting the engine mod done. Most common cause of the reduced performance is still split hoses..... Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I agree totally with NMJ, but I would just add that several plastic plenum manifolds have suffered hair line cracks, which gives the same reduced performance problem.

Hi Guys,
It only does the smoke if Ive been driving gently for a while eg a few days, then when i boot it I get the clouds of blue smoke and on two occasions limited performance shortly after. Yesterday I gave it some wellie and the smoke cleared, I did about 15 miles of gentle driving and there was a tiny bit of smoke during an overtake but that cleared quickly and further unleashing of the horsepower was absolutely fine.

Wouldnt the intake hoses cause black smoke?

yes driving gently for a few days can cause the oil to build up as NMJ describes.
Boot it, the second turbo kicks in and tend to blow out the excess oil.

Keeping the second turbo in use (2000 or 2500 rpm, can't remember) seems to keep things in check.

If your car is under warranty, you can say the smoke is bad, and depending on the warranty get the £1000 drain mod done. I think Mike managed to coerce his warranty provider to do it. Is that right Mike?

Get your intake hoses done under warranty too. And have a really good look for oil leaks, get them fixed too. Remove the under-tray to check, it's only three bolts, easy to whip off.

Yes I have limited (time) warranty and I can get the work done if it's needed. Ive already sorted a few issues out myself at my expense (towbar wiring, tow bar, parking sensors and a broken wire on air quality sensor) so im sure he will play ball if this work is needed. I'll drive it for a couple of days using the gas pedal a little more just to keep using above 2000 momentarily and see how it goes.

Greg,
Mine was very smokey whilst it was still covered by the Land Rover Approved Warranty.
I took the Main Dealer service manager on a short run to demonstrate the problem and he agreed that it was smokey and reported the problem to the warranty people, but they refused the claim, saying that it was not covered as a “Fault”
I refused to accept their ruling and insisted that it was sorted.
He took the matter up with JLR Customer relations dept. who agreed to cover the cost in full, “as a good will gesture” because it was still within warranty.

I have no problem taking car dealers or warranty companies to court, I've done it about 7 or 8 times now and won every time. They'd have a very difficult time in court explaining that blue oil smoke was not a fault especially in the light of the modification kit available from Land Rover to cure the problem. Hopefully it wont come to that if I modify my driving a little.

Thinking about it, yesterday when the blue smoke was the worst Ive seen, I had started it and moved it about 8 times before giving it some wellie up a dual carriageway so that really does fit what you guys are saying. BMW i3 Electric Car

I went for a little drive this afternoon, about 40 miles round trip, it's very difficult to spend any time North of 2000 RPM. When I did give it some wellie on the way back there was a slight haze of blue smoke that cleared in about 3 seconds. After that when I repeated the boot treatment the exhaust was clear.

Should I push to get the drain mod done or is it not worth it? BMW i3 Electric Car

Push, push, and....push again, for the following reasons. ( Not necessarily in order).

1... Thinkinking you must always keep trying to get the revs up to open up turbo2 and burn off excess oil takes away the pleasure of driving such a powerful torquey engine and can make you more aggressive whenever you think it needs a good burn, which in turn leads to reduced MPG.

2... All that dirty oil polluted smoke passing through the DPF must eventually contribute to DPF soot levels and associated failures.

3... The latest changes to MOT smoke tests for diesel cars fitted with DPF’s say that any visible smoke is an automatic FAIL.

4.... Anyone looking to buy who has done their homework would always choose a modified car in preference to an unmodified car.

5.... Y ou could eventually finish up having to fork out £1k+ once the guarantee period ends. to get it done.

There is a lot to be said for giving your car a regular Italian tune up diesel or not.

Ours doesn't have the mod its never smoked but we live in a hilly part of the world so the 2nd turbo gets used daily.

The restricted performance in ours was the inlet manifold hose. Got all four replaced for the new style ones no issues since. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography
