to buy the oil and sump your self its around the £160 mark, so an independent would charge about £250 and then about £100 labour if they are kind and maybe more , so id say £350 to £400 for a single drain and refill , £500 + for a double drain . That's just my un educated guess

They do have magnets, but that won't trap the non metallic clutch material as it wears off, there is also aluminium in there as well.... Pete

And the filter won't catch that either, as the particles are too small

The only way to rid them, is to change/flush the oil

Personally, I would have a power flush

This was the gearbox oil in a TDV8 FFRR, at 74k miles. The oil should be transparent, as you can see for the picture, it is far from it
Only a power flush will replace all of the oil, and remove all contaminents from the gearbox Thumbs Up

is that the one they call the mega death flush, also heard that they don't change your filter, scary

also heard that the power pressure can damage old oil seals within the box.The ZF video on you tube says just drain change and fill , if your gearbox is working fine id be very worried doing anything outside of what ZF suggest

Pete, looks interesting, I will dig further!

To all, if you have a ZF gearbox then power flush is the only way to improve any niggles without a full rebuild. And to everyone there is no such thing as a sealed for life gearbox, and I would personally half the service interval recommended by L/R, to extend the life of your ffrr gearbox beyond the 100K figure that a sealed for life is expected to reach. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... I believe you have been misinformed Whistle

The pressures involved are lower than the gearbox produces itself, whilst driving. The flush procedure uses the gearbox oil pump, to push the old oil out. The flushing machine measures the volume of old oil coming out, and automatically replaces it

The damage comes in the new oil, acting as a detergent, which cleans the old crap out of the oil galleries, bushes and seals.
A normal drain and refill will do exactly the same thing, but issues will not be apparent for a longer period, due to the reduced volume of new oil

The official service interval from ZF is a FLUSH every 80-120,000 Km's, or 50-75k miles, and 8 years at the very latest, depending on driving style. It is also advised more frequently if you do a lot of high speed driving, towing, or sporty driving.

FWIW, in over 80 gearbox flushes I have done in the last 12 months, I have never had issues with a gearbox afterwards.
But, I have refused to flush a few, due to various issues/high mile cars

Thumbs Up

If you are planning on doing it yourself you can buy a 20 litre tub for £140 which is pretty much what you would pay for 14 separate tubs you will need for 2 flushes, that way you can do 3 flushes and a filter for £200 there will be very little old stuff left after that and a big saving on the 'powerflush' !!

My old box (god rest it's sole) had red ATF in it when I bought the rangie, I drained out as much as I could and refilled it with new, correct oil..

I did that three times over a period of a few months, the oil I drained out when it finally died was still very red.... not as red as the first change but it was still defo red.... that was 20ltrs of oil at about £140 and three filters at £30odd quid each.... would have been cheaper and better in the long run to get it flushed but I was trying to do it on the cheap and I guessed the box was on it's last legs anyway....

So if you really want your oil swapped then get a flush, if your oil is a decent colour then just do a drop and change...

All the horror stories of boxes exploding etc are when people have a problem FIRST, get the oil changed, but they left it too late, and the box packs up so they blame the oil change rather then admit that they should have serviced the box earlier... Pete

I appreciate your comments , especially as you appear to do this for a living. Tell how much approx. is a flush?

on the ZF you tube video it does not show a flush just a drain and refill
