Rear Wheel Arch Rust Repair ?

Has anyone got any thoughts on how to fix the rust that appears to be coming through on the rear wheel arch lips ?

I've just been up to the local Land Rover approved repairers in Chesterfield, who say that it'll really need a new complete panel at £2500 ish. Someone on here did this if I remember right.

I appreciate that it can't be guaranteed it won't come back through, but can you not sand back to metal and start again with primers, undercoats, stone chip etc ?

Or, should we be looking for more of a "vehicle bodywork restorer", who can cut the lip out and replace with new metal ?

Like most of us I'd imagine - I don't really want it coming back through, but don't want it to cost a fortune..........

(nothing new there then !!)

many thanks

I did a search, and there were a few posts from people who had the issue, and what they were doing, but done said what exactly they'd done, and whether it had actually worked or not.

all the best

After treating and painting the lip edge you can fit a length of black plastic door edge trim, the type people use to protect door edgs from knocks, over the lip to protect it against further chipping etc. Butts up well against the rubber trim on the door edge when closed and looks surprisingly professional.

Great for catching dirt and water, does not allow the lip to dry out properly.

Better to treat with a Waxoxy type rust preventer and wash the lip with the hosepipe every now and then

Not at all, I applied a layer of grease to both sides of the lip before fitting the strip.
I have every confidence the lip is now well protected. I will re-apply the grease yearly.

Yep, did mine myself, and I am no expert at spray painting etc.

I rubbed down the rust, painted it with Hammerite satin black to cure/kill/stop the rust, then sprayed over with genuine colour spray paint from Dan @ Duckworths, gave it 2 coats, then 2 coats of clear lacquer afterwards.

Did it in between other outdoor jobs one weekend, all looks fine now, but mine was only surface rust, not corroded metal flaking away or anything. Discovery 4 HSE

Thanks Gents.

I spoke to the garage where I got the car, knowing they had some scuffs painted in. They can't remember if wheel arches had to be done. From memory, they thought it was only minor bits they had done, but are double checking for me on Monday. Obviously if they did pay for the arches to be fixed, it will have to be done again.

Failing that, think I'll find a bodyshop to treat it properly, and see how long it lasts.

Will keep you posted.

i see where your coming from , this edge is unprotected and with greaseing/waxing etc should prolong its life .
the l322 arch liner is crap compared to that of the p38 .
the p38 arch liner can be removed easy and is held in with plastic clips and the liner lips over the metal arch and is a good seal .
but the l322 lips behind the metal arch which allow dirt/mud to trap inbetween the metal arch and liner also the fixings for the liner are metal and rust away and break of
not a good design or improvement but a step backwards 1990 3.5 v8 defender

L/R replaced my rear right side wing under the 5 year anti corrosion warranty. Still had rust coming through on inner exposed steel lip from stone chips. Pity L/R did not fit rubber arch protectors. I have painted this area with hemerarite rubber wax oil to protect against stone chips this is an easy fix. Diver Bryn

Well, I've just dropped it off at the bodyshop, as the garage I bought it from have offered to pay for the work.
They are stonechipping the arches, amongst other things.

Should be ready Wednesday morning...........

Well I picked the car up yesterday, and I'm very happy with the results. The bodyshop said the rust was only on the surface. They have gone back to metal, treated it, stone chipped it and painted over it.

We shall see how long it lasts.

Plenty of dirt and dust left inside the car though, so for the 3rd time in less than a week, its having another thorough interior clean. Must be something about garages that work for car dealers not having to worry about it, as the car would normally be valeted by someone else after.........

Many thanks
