Restricted performance 4.4 tdv8

Hi all!

I have my new to me loveley alaska white 2012 4.4tdv8, but its not too happy at present.

It will drive all day sedately, even up to decent speeds, but if you out your foot down it immediately goes into restricted performance. Seems most likely to be something to do with the 2nd turbo due to the symptoms not being present under 2500 revs but happens every time beyond that.

The previous owner swears its never happened to him, but he drives quite slowly, seems like a nice guy and didn’t use it often between towing his caravan - so may be true… doesn’t matter now anyway.

Stored fault codes from powertrain module are below….
Permanent - p040d-00 exhaust gas temp sensor a circuit high
Intermittent - p004c-77 - turbo boost control solenoid b circuit low
Intermittent - p004b-71 - turbo boost control solenoid b circuit range/performance

Is this a common fault? A bit of research showed a sticky changeover valve could be at fault… where is it/what does it look like or anything else i need to check?

Welcome,

No idea of the codes, but there seems to be 2 culprits on these motors for that….

The 4 rubber hoses on the “donut” under the engine cover… split, perished or leaking….

The second turbo actuator that’s prone to sticking, down the front, sort of under the fan. Land Rover changed the design of it. Not sure when though.

Those would be my first ports of call.

Welcome to the forum , and the 4.4 tdV8 gang Rolling with laughter
Lots of excellent threads full of help and advice to help you sort any issues.

I would put my money on the CSOV being stuck, particularly if it is the old design with the nut on top of the spigot.

It’s easy to see from the top if you remove the hose from the throttle body and look down the gap behind the radiator.

I will find you some photos if it would help.

Its not the changeover valve, cant see a nut on top, just a stud so looks like the later design. I put oil on and hlgave it a wiggle anyway, but on test drive first time over 2500rpm it went into restricted again.

I’ll take the doughnut off and check the hoses next, although theres no obvious signs of a leak.

If anyone has any other ideas please let me know!

The donut (plenum) has been know to split at the seams so give this a good look whilst you have it removed.

I'm leaning towards it being one or more of the rubber hoses running into the donut. It's the most common fault on these 4.4 TDV8's. Had the same problem as you have encountered, FF was fine at normal speeds / lower revs, but would 'Fault' as soon as I gave it a bit of right foot on the loud pedal. I found a minor split on one of the right hand hoses going into the Plenum on my FF and that was what was causing my fault.
If you can, take the engine cover off and have a close look at the four hoses going into the Plenum (doughnut). The split / damage that is causing the fault may be really hard to spot, there may be a couple of tell-tale signs though such as sooting around one of the hoses caused by gases escaping. Maybe post a photo or two of the hoses and we can let you know if they are the original LR rubber ones or whether they've been replaced / upgraded with the better / later ones.

get a HIGH pressure smoke test done. It could be the inlet manifold.

Hopefully theres a pic on here showing the hoses. I’ve almost got to donut off. Can’t see any obvious leakage at this stage

They look like the Censored original hoses that are prone to splitting.
Get some silicone ones on. Can't remember the dimensions but there is a thread on here about it.
Search "silicone" maybe? Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Those appear to be the old style ones which were prone to splits. The newer ones pictured with the white lettering are the split proof ones. You can make your own much more cheaply from silicone reinforced tube. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)
