4.4 TDV8 Oil Leak Fix

As some of you may have read? The 4.4TDV8 engine seems to suffer with a catastrophic oil leak from the rear of the “V” leading to oil running down the bell housing, covering everything!!! Then runs onto the exhaust and stinks!

I have done almost every 4.4TDV8 we have seen so....... This appears to be a common issue!

So i did my own this weekend, which was NOT leaking much... But i knew it would develop if left.


First, remove the air box that houses the pollen filter, 2x 13mm headed nuts then pull the whole assembly off.
Next, remove the engine cover, simply pull it upwards and off.




The first two pics show the pipe with the 8mm headed bolt holding it in place.

Here is the pipe removed, Showing the two “flattened” rubber “O ring’s”

Here are the “O ring’s” removed and a simple “O ring” kit, available from fleabayetc etc...

And finally after replacement “O ring’s” fitted and the pipe refitted.

The car was then test driven, the mirror was then used to re-check there was no more leak Thumbs Up
Consider, my car has only covered 23k miles so worth looking whatever your milage is Thumbs Up

Any idea of somebody making "proper" silocone turbo hoses instead of the crap ones?

There's an excuse to get oily this weekend. I will get the boroscope on mine at the weekend. I'm sure I have a couple of boxes of o rings in the garage somewhere!

Think I can figure where it is from the pics, take it you are looking back RHS when facing the car. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

No no, bang on central NMJ... You will clearly see the lag'd pipe on the back, then look for the Ali pipe and follow it sir Thumbs Up

Easy to work with a small mirror as I did... A boriscope will be too close I think (certainly was with ours) Thumbs Up

Thanks for this useful post. As a matter of interest, could one check for such a leak from underneath the car as an alternative to removing the pollen filter housing etc (assuming nothing dripping on the ground and oil level normal)? Only Range Rovers since 1988

It is really tricky to see from underneath, as it is at the top of the engine. I used a boroscope to look down the back of the engine.i would think you would need to take off the pollen filter housing to get a mirror into position. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

The normal give away is the smell of burning oil on a long run, then you put it on a rang and OH Censored !!! CS... Thumbs Up

Thanks Craig - I have no reason to suspect that mine wont leak in due course. Do you know the O-ring size as I'll have to get them before starting but would rather not have to mail-order genuine spare parts.

The pollen filter is very simple and quick to remove, as is the engine cover, after which checking using a mirror is also quick and simple.

The pipe is the centre oil feed pipe and has been superseded, as has the original pipe for the 4.4 in the L405 and the o-rings don't appear to be available as spare parts. The seals may have been replaced with appropriate Viton versions leading to the new pipe part numbers. Replacing with general purpose o-rings is likely to be only a temporary fix.

Edit: Looking at standard O-ring sizes my guess they're either BS204 or BS205 - I can get Viton BS204 locally. However if metric size (most likely) then many size possibilities.

Graeme I’m sorry i don’t... How would one measure an “O ring”? i can happily take a measurement for you but am unsure what you want me to measure, and how? Bow down
