No idea what year model car the op has (fill details in Mad ) but on the tdv8 ones at least a torch will shine thru the bottle and let you see what the float is doing

United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Buckingham Blue

I recently had mine swapped out for a new Genuine one as old one was just too dirty.
Coolant flushed and replaced with new coolant. I can now see the level clearer
I also used a Sharpie pen to highlight the min and max embossed levels on the outside of the bottle. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Is there an easy way to try replacing the sensor without having to do the whole tank?

I am also having this problem, but as the sensor is only £5 I'd be tempted to try that if possible before disconnecting and removing the whole tank...

I have tried feeling around at the bottom of the sensor, but can't seem to find an easy way to pull it out. Is there enough room for it to come out with the tank in-situ?

Coolant level concentration giving a coolant level low m

So just reviving this thread as my experience with this over the weekend might help. So to cut a long story short, I had to get some work on my cooling system done recently and when I picked up the car there was a low coolant level message showing, though the bottle was full. I drove the car home and started my internet research. Like most people I was thinking bad sensor, dirt on the sensor, etc. and I was looking at replacing the bottle. But part of my research started bringing up the idea of a low coolant concentration bring on the low level warning. and a few You tube clips showed how the float will sink in water and float in a good coolant concentration. So yesterday I took my hydrometer and checked the level of concentration. I was surprised to learn that my concentration was very low, though by looking at the color of the coolant I would not have thought it was as low as it was. So I syphoned off as much as I could from the bottle which left me with about a 2 inch level in the bottom of the bottle. I then refilled the bottle with 1.5 liter of coolant concentrate and when I turned on the ignition. There was no more error, its was cleared.

So I think there is definity something with the concentration of the coolant and the low level. I have driven the car for about 30 miles and the low level warning has stayed off.

It may come back on again as the coolant in the bottle mixes with the rest of the coolant in the system the overall concentration reduces... let wait and see... I'm hoping not

United Kingdom 2003 Range Rover HSE Td6 Giverny Green

I ended up having to replace my expansion tank after first replacing the reed switch sensor. I did not dismantle/destroy the old tank to see what had happened to the float but strongly suspect that over the years it had accumulated pink crud build up adding weight to the float to the point that it would trigger low level.

My understanding is that the float DOES react to the specific gravity as well as water level, Current: 2003 TD6 HSE. 161,000 miles
