No idea what year model car the op has (fill details in Mad ) but on the tdv8 ones at least a torch will shine thru the bottle and let you see what the float is doing

United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Buckingham Blue

I recently had mine swapped out for a new Genuine one as old one was just too dirty.
Coolant flushed and replaced with new coolant. I can now see the level clearer
I also used a Sharpie pen to highlight the min and max embossed levels on the outside of the bottle. Gone to a good home: 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 V8 Stornoway Grey

Is there an easy way to try replacing the sensor without having to do the whole tank?

I am also having this problem, but as the sensor is only £5 I'd be tempted to try that if possible before disconnecting and removing the whole tank...

I have tried feeling around at the bottom of the sensor, but can't seem to find an easy way to pull it out. Is there enough room for it to come out with the tank in-situ?
