I'm getting a bit fed up of the harsh ride on my 2012 Westie, I feel every bump in the road, and it's quite bumpy over speedbumps whereas my 2006 car was fairly floaty, maybe too much so.

I've nothing to compare it with honestly, it's a huge expense to go to to replace all 4 shocks with new active ones, and not much cheaper to get non active ones.

How can I tell what my ride is supposed to be like as mine feels overly harsh ?

& can I disable the CVT temporarily so that it reverts to comfort just to check it ?

If you want a floaty front end then fit some Dunlop struts and bags.
Had to change mine because of a leak in one air bag.
Is it possible that old shocks have 'stiction' due to wear causing the harsher ride?

I feel exactly the same as Andy roo. The ride quality on my 2011 4.4 with 95k on the clock is horrendous compared to my previous 2005 l322. I am also looking into the possibility of replacing my shocks with standard old school ones. The other problem is the ride quality issue is unpredictable,occasionally the ride can be fine then the next journey it’s back to the bone shaker ride again.

The shocks will be at their firmest if the sytem is disabled, which is easy to do by unplugging a front shock's electrical connector. If the ride isn't much different on other than very smooth surfaces then unless the CVD system has a hardware fault causing incorrect operation of the valves, the shocks are worn-out and unable to smooth the ride. Note that air-springs don't provide any damping, unlike steel springs which do, so if a shock isn't damping on even the smallest of shaft movements then the ride will be harsh.

I replaced all shocks several years ago with Bilsteins when it became obvious that the originals were worn-out, after which the good ride was restored. However I was dissapointed that Bilstein had fitted Dunlop air-springs rather than Continentals, one of which failed 2 years later on an internal fold where it couldn't possibly have been damaged externally.

Do just the front shocks get swapped out or do the air springs also have to be replaced with them at the same time 2012 Supercharged L322

Hi, I can't help feeling that I'm following the route of Sam of Sam's Motor and Machine, I've been going through his videos recently and almost every step is Deja Vu, that's just like mine etc..

I've tried the old DSC Off and Sand Mode with DSC off bit, but I've not noticed any difference.

I've pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the whole lot are shot and I'm in the hole for £2k worth of parts. Car's only done 80k, but it's still 12 years old now. I could carry on driving it, it's perfectly useable.

I'm going to work my way up as he did with the cheapest parts first, do the levelling calibration, then the height sensors, then the rear shocks, I'm going standard CVD not Bilstein, then I guess I'm going to have to stump up for the fronts eventually.

I'm convinced it's at the front though, as over speed bumps the front bounces more than glides, the rear tends to appear more softly sprung, but that could just be my saggy butt.

I guess, if it still doesn't fix it, at least I'm buying peace of mind for a few years on the suspension.

Mine came to me with Arnott's already on the front as of December 2019. I've since had to replace the sway bars and bushings. I also replaced the rear with bilsteins about a year ago (which have been perfect). 2012 Supercharged L322

I have Bilstein rear CVDs which were fitted several months before the fronts were changed and I have no complaints with the performance of any. However Bilstein rear air-springs don't extend the extra distance of the later L322 shocks, with both torn apart in a short time even though Bilstein shocks were fitted.

Mine's shocks were worn-out by 80K kms although I persisted for another 20-40K kms, wanting to delay the inevitable expense.

My problem looks like it's the front end, I disconnected one of the turrets and drove around the block, the front seemed much the same, but the rear was noticably much harder.

Have to start poking around the front I guess, all new pads going in so that's an ideal time to dig in.
