Hi all, does the central tops dash vent just pop out? Is there any special technique it remove it? I have just got my hands on some of these screens and want to mimic the install.

The best way to remove it is with a plastic trim removal tool. You can get a set cheaply from eBay. If you use a screwdriver you can mark the trim. The vent is attached to the tube bit but that just pulls off once the the vent is released

I have been working on this this weekend. Making the cover plate takes some time, I covered with some leather in the end to make it look as neat as possible.

The aux cable is a pain… I didn’t realise it was in the back panel… I have ordered longer cable from Amazon and will run that I the future.

I think dropping it in to the vent area make it look very factory, I would like to neaten the front edge up but you can’t have everything for just over £50.

Yeah the aux is a pain... I've actually ordered some inline Aux amplifier and a voltage regulator and *eventually* planning on modifying the loom so it's all hidden...

So far it's holding up and working well.

Yes, the long aux cable is a pain. But it is easy to hide on its run to the back. It can go behind the trim in the footwell and then you can push it under the tunnel trim. There is a post on here somewhere describing how to hide the aux connection at the back. I must admit I haven’t bothered.
My plastic panel matches the top of the dash very well ( by sheer fluke) but I would be interested in seeing your leather job.

I’ve taken a few photos copying the OP’s install, but trying to show the over all look.
Is wired into the fuse box using a mini fuse piggy back adaptor on the cig lighter fuse, so it turns on as soon as you open the car and off when you hit the lock button, or it times out with overall power shutting down on the car if you don’t lock the doors.

Its stuck to the plastic structure using the original bracket and I made a covering plate out of an old license plate, I did paint it but never likes the look so I covered it with some material I had lying around, it doesn’t match the grain of the dash but it looks neat enough.

What I have found, the wired aux connection works but the amp in the decide is too quiet if you like loud music, the over all quality of the sound is not as good as the Bluetooth straight into the iPod connector in the centre box. Strangely the fm transmitter is louder.

Over all it works and looks ok for £50 the panel takes some time to make with a coping saw… I’ve tried to show the overall install of the panel which just sits there as the knob of the mounting screw puts it under a little tension.

That looks a good job with your leather finish.
It’s strange that your aux volume is down. I certainly haven’t noticed that and I like to turn up my Dadrock tunes when I’m on my own in the car! Makes me wonder if there is a setting somewhere for aux volume. In my wife’s old Freelander the aux volume was poor until one day I stumbled on a setting for aux vol in the car’s menu. Might be worth investigating.

That looks fantastic! I was considering sinking mine in like you did, but it covered a bit too much of the lower screen.

I managed to source the leather from eBay and it is quite a good match

2011 Vogue SE 4.4 with lots of toys in Stornaway

My 10.6" unit from AliExpress, all of £46, just arrived. I'm going to give it a go later, if its something to recommend I'll share the details.

They really are a bargain at less than £50., I paid nearly 3 times that nearly 4 years ago, but it has been an investment well worth every penny.
I bought it because I had moved into an area completely new to me and was struggling to find places, but it solved the problem overnight.

The units are amazingly cheap now and seem to be very decent quality with a very responsive touch screen. I recently bought a Roadtop to do the installation for a friend at under £50.I paid about £90 a year or so ago!
Re; the query about routing the cable; it’s easy. Pass the cable under the dash to the corner of the dash with a routing device. I used a straightened out coat hanger.
I don’t quite know what you mean about a metal plate in the recess so can’t comment on that.

Thanks for the replies, I had 2 questions

1 - How to get the cable through the dash from the glovebox, exiting to the right of the existing screen.

2 - the metal mount I the picture I included, how far does that push into the gap between the top of the dash and the screen? I assume it's just friction from wedging it in that keeps it in place..

Using the unit today, initial observations are that the audio is either phone to the unit then Aux cable into the car or phone to car via Invery or similar. I've got an Invery unit and this keeps the steering wheel controls too so I'll go down that route. It also means there's 1 less cable to route around the car. Secondly, the mount from the screen to the unit outs it too far away from the drivers seat to be comfortable. Getting the unit closer to the driver will be.easier and safer to use. The downside is I lose the inbuilt camera but it came with a remote camera so I can route that if needed.

Tomorrow's job is now to play around with a mount and get some cables routed to neaten things up.
