I doubt that a fault would be detected and if the timing was retarded then I would expect idling to be very smooth.

The exhaust gas temp is still high enough even on cold start to vaporise excess oil or diesel in the exhaust. White smoke on startup is a classic sign of exhaust side turbo seal failure and it would still run smoothly. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

I had a look under the bonnet of our 4.4 as I was in the workshop next to it earlier.

That white smoke kan be caused by the turbo leaking on the exhaust side. It then just heats the oil instead of burning it. Uou wont find much oil in the intercooler.

I accept what you say but not in the first two seconds of starting from stone cold surely? The video last 23 seconds. Granted I revved it when the smoke became a white out but at idle within 2 seconds or less of starting? Sorry I can't see that. Rehab is for quitters!!! I think a leaking exhaust side turbo oil seal will smoke almost immediately on cold start. As long as there are hot combustion gasses entering the turbo exhaust side and there is oil in there it will vaporise. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

It’s not blue smoke so you can effectively rule out an intake oil problem. Turbo’s can leak from the compressor side but usually it’s the exhaust side as this is where the combination of heat and oil lubrication problems will do the most damage. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

White smoke that smells of engine oil is the obvious one. Collect enough of it in a rag over the tailpipe and it should be easy to tell if it’s oil or diesel. Unbolt the down pipe from the turbo and an oil leak will be obvious as will any excessive turbo shaft play. Main reason for turbo oil seal fail is oil starvation. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |

Actualy you may not even have to unbolt the downpipe as if it's leaking oil it will likley be seeping out of the joint between turbo and downpipe. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322) |
