Key will not turn, common problem....

Hello on Sunday from Germany, new customer car (L322 4.4 SC 2007), new problem. The key cannot be turned, it does make the usual CLICK-CLICK where the steering wheel lock is unlocked, but you can only turn the key a small amount. The customer was in a car wash 100km away!! when the car could no longer be moved. What excitement in the small village. A local garage owner came and helped by removing the ignition switch so he could shift from P to N and tow the car with the steering wheel lock open. He ordered a new lock cylinder from Landrover in the hope that that was the problem. At the same time he sent me the lock cylinder with key without the ignition lock flanged underneath with the ON OFF function. The lock cylinder is located in a small box with a power connection at the bottom. I disassembled the box and out came a small magnet with a bolt that obviously needs to be switched positive to unlock the full rotation of the key. I'll go there tomorrow and see if it's actually the usual problem with the upper steering column. Have any of you ever had this problem? Many greetings from Düsseldorf, Uli L405 SDV8 2017 + Lancia Flavia Coupe 1964 + RRS L494 3.0 SDV6 + C220CDI Convertible 2021

I had a similar problem with my 2003 Merc SL, started being temperamental and eventually would not turn in the ignition at all. I got a mobile key guy to take a look. It turns out the key was no longer talking to the ignition. And he couldn’t re-program it. He set up two new keys and all is good.

Here’s a thread I found
