Ar$e!!!!!!

There was nothing on the tv tonight so I decided to go back into the workshop to finish off a few odds n sods. The new starter motor was in situ but I hadn’t connected the terminals to it.

A quick look in the workshop manual saw the main feed terminals gets tightened to 10nm and the solenoid feed terminal goes to 4nm.

I grabbed a 1/4“ torque wrench to do both bolts, first up I set it to 4nm with an 8mm socket on it to tighten the solenoid terminal down and before the torque wrench clicked the sodding terminal snapped off the starter motor! In exactly the same place and fashion that the old one had done when I removed it from the car!

This is a genuine Denso starter motor as per the original fitted by LR. I’ve emailed the place I bought it from tonight in the hope they might replace it as if it won’t take the torque figures specified by LR in the workshop manual then it’s not really fit for purpose.

I‘m not holding my breath that it’ll be replaced though Sad Here’s hoping it’s 3rd starter motor lucky!

So near, you can almost hear it running...!!

I expect, as you say, they will wriggle out of it and just say you over tightened it....

Maybe just nip up the next one Question Question Pete

The Starter Motor and Alternator Co in Plymouth have been nothing short of fantastic.

I sent them pictures of what happened and without even questioning anything they’ve dispatched a replacement.

Looking at this one again today, the terminal site directly to the side of the connection coming out of the body of the starter and it should be spot welded in place. There are barely any makes of adhesion on this one so I can only assume that it wasn’t welded properly during manufacture.

Hopefully the next one will be OK.

Annoyingly though, the bung I need for the cooling system is on back order with no date on it. Sad

Found the bung in stock too!

Land Rover don’t have them, Jaguar don’t have them, none of the UK dealers have them, however, Britpart have a genuine LR one in stock which should be here on Wednesday Smile

At 18:20 this evening the DPD driver arrived on the door step with a brown box. Inside the brown box was another new Denso starter motor. Another massive shout out to The Alternator and Starter Motor Company in Plymouth. Their support and service has been nothing short of exceptional. I will be using them again without a seconds thought when I need something else. Hopefully not for a while though... Very Happy

After we'd had dinner and we'd got the little fella to sleep I went out to the workshop and got this one fitted. I'm pleased to report that this one was fitted, torqued and button up with no issues. Then I refitted the heat shield and both splash covers that protect the starter motor back on.

I then put my tools away and nervously reconnected the battery so I could open the glovebox to retrieve the handbook to figure out which fuse cut the feed to the fuel pump. The handbook states "Fuses in the engine bay fuse box should only be looked at by qualifies personnel". So... seeing as the fuel pump fuse wasn't in the passenger compartment or the load space fuse box I whipped the cover off it and established it was fuse 6 that controls the fuel pump.

Before removing that, I put the ignition on and connected my IID tool so that I could clear the fault code that was caused by the timing being out previously. To my surprise I had a permanent fault for the throttle pedal. I switched the ignition off again and had a look at the plug going into the throttle body. I had laid the wiring loom out and put everything loosely in situ so that I could run the cables and secure them properly. Annoyingly, I'd sat the throttle body plug on the socket but hadn't pushed it in. I managed to get my finger down to it and when giving it a shove I heard a nice reassuring "click". I fired up the IID tool and cleared that fault and it said there were no faults on the Powertrain Control Module Very Happy

I then pulled fuse 6 from the fuse box, climbed inside the car and with trepidation put my foot on the brake pedal and pressed the Start button...

She cranked over for a cycle and just before that cycle finished she spluttered. Presumably as some fuel from the lines made it to the injectors. I then refitted the fuel pump fuse and this time I got my Dad to sit inside it whilst I kept an eye on things under the bonnet.

When he hit the button this time, this happened!

The oil pressure light went out straight away. It was run for just under 30 seconds as it emptied the coolant bottle so we stopped it and added more coolant then ran it again and allowed it to come off fast idle.

Unfortunately, I'm still waiting on the plastic bung for the cooling system so I couldn't take my finger off that coolant spigot under the bonnet.

And just to prove that there's no more timing warning lights on the dashboard Very Happy

I'm expecting the bung to arrive from Duckworths tomorrow so I can bleed the cooling system properly and with a bit of luck we can get her out for a run tomorrow evening!

All in all it's been a really, really satisfying evening. Even paying the DVLA £700 didn't take the shine off this one!

Hi David
Your videos are coming up as "private" so I cannot see them.

Also I thought you said the Bung was in stock at Britpart not Duckworths!

Looking forward to watching the videos....

Videos should be working now Smile

It was in stock at Britpart. Thankfully, it was Rob at Duckworths who found it so it went from Britpart to Duckworths to me.

Superb service from Rob at Duckworth Land Rover as always! The bung was ordered Monday, with him yesterday and here before 10am today!

Especially good service seeing as Land Rover, Jaguar and none of their dealers had it in stock and he managed to find it with a 3rd party!

Going to be a long day at work now! 😂

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

I didn’t update this last night… However, Wednesday night saw the cooling system being bled properly following the procedure in the book. All the under trays were put back on after we had a good look over it for leaks too.

The engine cover was refitted and the car was finished.

I left it on the ramp to cool down over night after it spent 2 mins idling to get heat into the heaters followed by 8 mins at 2000rpm to circulate the coolant through the engine. It burped a lot of air so I topped it up this evening and she came out of the workshop!

I do like opening the door to these when it’s dark! I spent a long time looking for a set of these to retrofit to my old L322 but couldn’t find them so it’s quite nice that this one has them!

First trip is now complete and it was a complete success.

I’d had the car idling for a while before leaving home as I checked the tyre pressures so there was already some heat in the car.

The junction out of our village was shut so we had to take the back roads through to Bishopton. We did almost 8 miles with the revs below 2000rpm to ensure that the coolant temperature didn’t move and to ensure that there were no funny noises or warning lights.

We then joined the M8 via the new long slip road at Bishopton. When on that slip road I took the revs up to 4000rpm gently in 2nd and 3rd gear before settling down to a cruise at 2000rpm in 6th gear again. I then came off at Paisley and joined the A737 towards Irvine and again took the car up to 4000rpm with a little more throttle then previously before coming off at Linwood.

A quick whip around the roundabout at Linwood saw us heading back the way we’d just come and back up the slip road onto the A737. We’d now covered around 15 miles so on the slip road I used wide open throttle for the first time since I’ve owned the car.

Considering this is the same engine that was in the XFR, it couldn’t be any more different! The XFR saw the pedal act as a switch if you went to wide open throttle quickly in 2nd gear and it pinned you straight back into the seat. Whilst there was no supercharger noise in the XFR there was engine noise. In the Range Rover there is zero supercharger noise and almost no engine noise in the cabin but you can see the revs and the speedo climbing at a rate of knots. The way it picks up speed is almost unbelievable as there is no drama whatsoever.

I lifted off at motorway speeds and settled back into a steady cruise on the way home before giving it a blip on the long straight before home. Not exceeding 70 at all anywhere on the whole trip obviously Smile

The car is silky smooth and is running beautifully. I’m over the moon with it. It drives as nicely as my Dads 26,000 mile 2012 L322 does. Difference being he bought his brand new and paid a lot more for it then I did mine Very Happy

The only thing I could pick a fault with was on the long climb up the single lane on the way back to the house tonight I thought I felt a very slight misfire from it. The IID didn’t show anything when I tried to make it do it again so maybe I’m just imagining it. It’s running to well for it to be anything major so I’ll keep an eye on it and see what happens.

Hopefully over the weekend we can give it a run and get some miles on it now it’s done though!

Oh yea… after 20 miles of mostly sensible driving this was the result… It’s definitely a petrol Laughing

There was something about my last one that I just didn’t gel with, even after all the work I did to it. This one I’m smitten with though. It’s very hard to find faults with it.

The next big job on this thread will likely be undersealing this one. I’m still trying to make my mind up on what product I’m going to use to do it though. 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Love the work Thumbs Up your previous thread is the reason I got a 4.2 last year Laughing

I took mine to Preseve & Protect, not sure if I'd recommend it as I wasn't impressed with the attention to detail tbh - considering how much it cost. I've discovered quite a lot of thick underseal over existing corrosion in places. I thought I could pay cash to get out of doing it myself but it seems not, but maybe my expectations were too high...
