I know renewal costs of corroded brake pipes have been discussed on this forum but what does it really mean when they are the subject of an MOT advisory?

I have had this on the last two MOTs. If I do nothing about it what would happen eventually, would they rust to the point where brakes are suddenly lost or would they become corroded to a point that they are deemed a "failure" of the MOT? before this happens.

In other words does an advisory suggest that the items tested will last for the next 12 months ,as I think is the assumption for most other things tested and passed, or is there no such guarantee?  RR owner

I know if I had an advisory for corroded brake pipes I’d get them replaced asap.

If the bits they can see are corroded, I dread to think what the pipes under the plastic covers where all the mud gathers are like. insist on Cunifer for replacements.

Just get them changed.

If, God forbid you had an accident (even if not brake related) your insurance company could argue that you had failed to maintain the vehicle properly & refute the claim.

Don't forget that MOT histories are in the public domain.

My rear brake lines failed a recent MOT due to corrosion. It was a nightmare getting anyone to do the job. Took it back the MOT garage and whilst they were checking out the brakes again the lines popped! From what I have been told it is a very common weakness on the rears especially near the flex lines.

Cost around £550 all in to get sorted. Tom

Mine failed during the MOT test on the rollers. I had them replaced with Kunifer 10 brake pipes which should have been standard fit from JLR. To fit standard brake piping to a premium car that's designed to wade through water is crazy, Kunifer corrosion resistant brake pipes don't cost that much more. BMW i3 Electric Car

I had an advisory on brake pipes few years ago and replaced with Kunifer, I seem to remember a 7.6 metre
coil of the stuff was about £25 + fittings. Well worth doing for piece of mind. Joe90 did a great write up with
loads of pictures.

I didn’t have any advisories for the brake pipes on my 2004 FullFat but one day the pipe which crosses from the left rear nearside to the right rear decided to split.That was a fun day…..

my 2004 had advisories going on the front pipes . Changed them ,tried the brakes and whoosh lost all pressure resistance . Had brake pipe fluid all over the sill ,removed the plastic and wow accident waiting to happen ,all with rot ,one had burst . Changed the lot .
The mot lad says its a VERY common fault but as theres a plastic cover over them he cant comment on them as hes not permitted to remove them ,hence the advisories on the pipes he can see which are available to see.

My 322s had this, the 2004 one failed its MOT on corroded brake lines. Based on mine, there is probably surface corrosion but if failure were imminent it would have failed. Clearly you can't go wrong just getting the work done. But maybe step 1 is to discuss with the tester what sort of life is still in the lines. On one occasion mine were treated with a rust inhibitor like Dinitrol (not sure which) and with that treatment they lasted a while longer. But as a general comment 322 brake lines are not especially durable and one has to be prepared to replace etc from time to time. Only Range Rovers since 1988
