My indy is maybe a bit enthusiastic with my wallet Confused

he said the engine had to come out to change the turbos. "it needs some intelligence to undestand you may not have enough"

I'd agree with that, there doesn't at this stage seem to be anything other than normal oil usage. If you are at all worried, you can get a cheap boroscope from Amazon or fleabay and poke it down the hose to check for wear or pooling of oil.

Modern turbos are designed to pass oil through the bushings, unlike the older style ones with a hard seal, this is to ensure there is no carbon build-up against the seal which will progressively reduce the lubrication - which was the main causal point of diesel engine turbo failures.

Alas I agree, but getting my hand on a new independent mechanic that know his way around a 2012 TDV8 is quite hard around these parts.

Remember I drive on the other side of the road here Wink FFRR are not as common as in the UK.

IME it's not a practical proposition to own one of these without easy access to a specialist. Even I'm struggling with this aspect of ownership living in the capital city of the UK. 2012 TDV8 Vogue (L322)

What? How the mechanic can say something like that without ensure? We have gravity on the earth, and if you have remarkable oil leakage from turbos, where this oil going at first? Of course on the bottom, in lower point of intake. It takes 10 minutes to ensure.
At first open the lower hoses from intercooler. Depending of how much oil coming out from there, make a desigion. If just couple of drops, forget about it, tight better the intake manifold hoses and continue driving. After apr. one mont check again. If again the same result - everything is ok with your turbos and everything else, just drive, enjoy your car and forget about this issue.
If the oil flow out from the lower hose (100-200g, or maybe even half liter) - only then you have a problem.
And, what about your oil level, is it drops? If not at all, where is the issue? If it drops lets say 0,5-1l/10000km its still ok, normal wear for used diesel engine. If you need to add the oil between service intervals, only then you need to start thinking about where its going.
And even then, its not 100% sure there is a turbochargers fault. Need to make deeper diagnostic, find out where this oil coming from and why...still cant belive that someone just saw couple drops of oil immidietly concluse to death both turboshargers.

go get your car back and enjoy it there is nothing wrong with your turbo's induction system normally has a misting of oil in it as already mentioned. check your oil level and monitor over the next few hundred or thousand KM's if the car is drinking oil you may have an issue if not then no leaking. Mine has 130k miles on it i service it every 6 months and never have to top the oil up. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

If it does not smoke on the over run, its OK. I had an early Classic R/R with a Mazda Perkins 3 litre turbo charged engine in the mid nineties which pushed oil out where ever it could. The firm that did the conversion said it was normal, and the engine would last 400k miles before looking at it. The main reason it pushed oil out was a lack of Waste Gate, and over pressuring the inlet. Luckilly modern engines do not seem to have these problems, except, perhaps the 3.6 tdv8 engine. Landrovers that do not leak oil are not common in my experience, and I have four of them currently.

Jaguar3 makes a good point - if the intercooler has a lot of oil in it (>0.5litre) then you have a problem, if not, get your car back & enjoy.
