Intermittent Sat Nav Fault---- HELP

Well, not intermittent.... more like 99.99% of the time it doesn't work!

Sat nav (MK4) has not worked since the day I bought the FFRR TDV8 2007.
Little GPS Symbol, with a red line through it, appears on the Top Left of the Nav Screen.

Then yesterday I had to drive 350km and...... blooming thing was working for 75% of the trip.... heaven!!
On the way back however, it didn't work until I went into a very tight motorway offramp curve, and way-hay, it kicked in again. Some use that was... I was nearly home.

Up to now, having done the 753 diagnostic, I was thinking that it was the SatNav ECU (DVD Drive) which was faulty... but now I am not sure.

Would an ECU fault partially rectify itself, or is it more likely that the GPS Antenna is somehow wet or otherwise faulty?

Would really appreciate any thoughts and opinions from members. Thumbs Up FullFat Porridge

not sure here but you mentioned the mk4 nav unit and you have a 2007 RR, that is the wrong unit for your car V8 facelift Range Rover Autobiography 22" wheels.

sounds like the movement of the car bounced the laser in the nav dvd unit causing it to stop working..

The mapping has been working fine. Smile albeit a 2007 set of maps.
In 753 Diagnostics mode, the system can see Satelites, but won't take a fix off them. Sad

I found a diagnostics manual online somewhere which implied that it was an ECU fault, but after my experience on Thursday I am wondering if it may be a problem with the gps antenna cable, sitting in water or somehow reduced integrity. FullFat Porridge

My mistake. Having read all the info I can find online, I assumed it was the MK4 Ford based system.

Suggest updating the firmware using the latest map disc and re-seating all the connectors. That may well cure it. If not and it turns out to be a faulty DVD unit I have a spare one which I could be persuaded to part with.

Part numbers as on the label you show are
YIB500070
462100 - 8318

Denso unit from a 2007 Vogue.

UPDATE:
Tried the latest maps and firmware.
Much MUCH better firmware (Thanks Scarey), but hasn't cured the "No GPS" problem.
Have ordered a GPS Antenna with the FAKRA Connector on fleabay. Will check if that cures the problem.
I'm not convinced it is the DVD Unit... at least I am seriously hoping that it's not !!!

Keep yee posted. FullFat Porridge

UPDATE.
New GPS Antenna worked for 1 minute, then back to non-functional.
The real-time positioning works OK, based on gyro and speed I guess, but as soon as the FFRR goes on a road which isn't on the maps it goes out of sync.... never to return.

Pity I can't talk directly to Land Rover or Denso about it, and the Dealerships really don't give a toss.

I would like to have it working, but in reality it's not worth the cost of replacing the DVD Unit. If this is going to be a regular fault with the Sat Nav in 2007 on models, wouldn't you think Land Rover would like to get the data so that they can head off the negative vehicle relaibility reputation that they have long suffered from?

OK, probably don't care that much! FullFat Porridge

The DVD unit isn't just the disc drive it contains the Nav computer too. Now I have heard any stories about these being a source of particular problems and I think that you are just unlucky on this occasion. The DVD unit is the same part for all pre 10MY touchscreen vehicles so 06MY - 09MY they are always around on eBay and I've seen a few on here too.

strange it only worked for a minute..suggests that that maybe the connections on the dvd drive might be loose and when you connected the gps antenna ,the loose connection was temporary solved..hope that makes sense..

Hey guys

I am having exactly the same issue.

The little GPS symbol has a red line through it.
Bought a flea bay fakra antenna and still no joy.

Have done the 2009 firmware...

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Or have a spare DVD unit I can try to see if the problem is in there?

Cheers

Sat Nav - No GPS... The Plot Thickens

Hmmm.
Changed the Antenna (told you that before), and it didn't fix the problem.
Today I received a 2nd hand unit (which came with an official 2010 Disc!), but still no GPS.

Water ingress on the similar Jaguar units is common so I would suspect this. Replacement is the answer....
