Hey guys not sure if anyone is interested, but my car got a smack in work , I’m in the process of sorting it out and I’ve been very fortunate to be given help from members on other problems and if it helps someone I’ll do a write up …

Long story cut short I’ve been told the damage is unrepairable and the panel needs to be replaced.

Quoted from body shops were all silly money.

So I bought myself a few new tools and decided to have a bash myself

So basically the damage is qtr panel, rear light and bumper .

Biggest problem in the qtr panel , it’s folded in, creased and ripped . Everything else is bolt on.

So first thing needed is to find a bumper and light fitting, no work can be undertaken on the qtr panel till these are acquired, as these are the reference points for reshaping the qtr panel . .

Light was 140 quod off eBay perfect match .

Bought a used bumper and the one I got was terrible the lad I bought it off should be ashamed of himself selling something so bad I hope his airbags leak Bought another used one from forum member on here and while it looked good all the tabs were broken .

No big deal first job repair the tabs

Good to see you having a bash (pun) do you have previous bodywork experience (panel beater)?

Had something similar sorted out here where old school panel beating still exists, they did a brilliant job for not too much money tbh.

Going to be interesting to see your progress

No background as a panel beater or painter.

But I have a lifetime of fixing stuff I break ?

On topic… because every bumper I’ve see has broken tabs I really didn’t want to put the bumper on line everything up then take it off to paint so I decided I would paint the bumper prior to putting on , so I filled , sealed, primed and painted the bumper 2 coats of base 3 of clear - the results I got were phenomenal. There is more orange peal on the factory finish than what I produced - I sprayed in my shed I plastic sheeted everything in the shed
Gun used was devilbliss flg5 1.3 cap.

Sprayed base wide open fan and wide open fluid.
Base was sprayed at a little under 2bar.

clear coat sprayed at bang on two bar, super close & super wet, but kept gun moving.

So stripped back all the paint with fiber paint removal wheel on a grinder ,
I then used hammer and dolly’s to reshape the panel - this is a slow process but super easy to do .

After all the dolly work the panel was looking great but was suffering from the phenomenon known as “oil canning“
Common problem from over worked metal.

As I said I’m not a professional and just figured it out as I went . I had overstretched the panel with my hammer and dolly work.

So back to the old skool shrinking the metal.

Hit the panel with heat then use a wet towel to cool the area quickly … well let me tell you this works a teat !! Panel now taught again after a couple of

Not too bad , considering ever body shop I spoke to said it couldn’t be done , well it can’t be done .

So just doing final shaping around the wheel, this profile needs to be spot on I did the flat part first as this set up everything else .

Mark out where the profile is and then sand to the line .

Getting your style lines is super important as the entire shape of the car is altered if you mess this bit up.

I had a little bit of corrosion on back door so I’ll paint and blend on that door.

Well now the weather has decided to change and now it’s raining . Was planning on getting paint done today but that’s now not happening .

To recap on body filler and sand paper I used

Fibreglass on inside corner that the metal was torn in,( I was going to weld it but decided I didn’t want to risk distortion of the panel )

P38 body filler shaped with 60 grit

Blocked down with 80grit

Then blocked with 120 grit

Dolphin glaze over that

Misted a bit of whatever rattle can I had on the shelf as a guide coat

Blocked down with 120

Then blocked with 240

I will put 2-3 heavy coats of high build primer over this.
