Transfer Box oil leak

Another day, another problem Sad

My FF has started leaking oil on the drive, so I've run it back into the dealer and they have diagnosed the leak as a faulty oil seal on the transfer box. Evidently it's a 5 hour job to fix, so I can only assume it's a transfer box and possibly gearbox out time. Thankfully the approved used LR warranty have authorised the repair so it won't hurt the bank account.

Whilst they have the car in pieces, is there any preventative maintenance in that area, that I should get them to do at the same time?

Thanks

Justin

Been there in January-February only it was a diff oil seal not TF box so YMMV (I hope so!)

Potential horror story (at least for the warranty company!)

Oil seal on diff (facing TF box) involved stripping thee exhaust and so on,

The bleed screw was corroded in place, warranty engineer called out to approve new diff: approved!

re-fitting they snapped a manifold bolt which needed a 'special tool' (I offered to loan them my Snap-On extractor Rolling Eyes )

Then diagnosed a vibration; Engineer called to approve two new drive shafts: Approved!

Total parts bill £1150 (plus a brand new windscreen because part of the heater wasn't clearing)

Lovely stuff!

I hope the TF box is much easier!

Good luck! Thumbs Up

My transfer box started leaking a short while ago, I removed the breather and blew it through with an airline. So far no more leaks, hoping it was just an obstructon in the breather pipe. Only time will tell......

Mine was leaking from the seal between the two halves.(it splits in two) been done twice now. It is a 4-5 hour job apparently.

If it's either the input or output seal then the box still comes out and gets split to replace them iirc. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Yes, I think it is leaking from the split. If you've had it done twice its obviously a common fault! Did hunters in derby do it?

Yes, not a cheap job to do at the md though, the did it the first time under warranty, the second time the knocked me some cash off as it had only been done 18 months earlier. Its only a silicone seal so no parts are needed. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

No gasket? Just silicon?? Shocked

Do you have to take the gearbox out as well as the transfer box or just the transfer box?

Just the transfer box, then it needs
Splitting to re seal.

I stripped a DD295 down here : http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic12404.html in case anyone was wondering what the parts look like.

Excellent and interesting write up. Is it much trouble to just split the casing and apply some new silicone or do I have to take all the ancillary bits off first?

Is it much of a job to get out?
