2012 TD8 Westminster, starter clicking

Intermittently starter clicks but won’t crank, it appears to happen when brake pedal is “soft”, if I pump the pedal to firm more often than not the starter cranks and the vehicle starts. I am considering starter replacement or brake light switch replacement 🤔🤔🤔🤔. I have tried to access the brake light switch but can’t find the way to remove the panel beneath the steering wheel. I’ve checked YouTube which shows older models that have a clipped “pull down” panel but the Westminster seems to be moulded. I have removed the lower panel but this doesn’t gain access to the switch. All advice gratefully received 🙏

It will be the starter motor, common problem on your model.

The thread will probably be moved to L322 general or maintenance, but anyway, when my 2012 WM starter clicked and would not start intermittently it was cured by replacing the starter motor. It seems a very common fault. The brake light switch wasn't mentioned, and as it does not click it might be less likely to be the problem. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Another vote here for the starter motor. Our 2012 car is on it's third.

It's incredibly simple to change and requires removing nothing other than the engine under tray. You do not need to remove the wheel, arch liner or anything like that.

I bought a Denso from Euro Car Parts for ours that was just over £300. They were in stock in Glasgow too and since fitting it we've had no further problems.

Thanks David, I’ve been checking out starter removal on YouTube and some are removing a piece of exhaust and others heat shields and having issues reaching the top securing bolt……..is it really an easy replacement with just the bottom cover removed ? I do have access to a ramp. I really appreciate your help thanks, Burkie

Yes it’s relatively straight forward. If you’ve access to a ramp even better. Bit of a squeeze getting it out. I followed the you tube video and did it on axle stands. Spent about three hours including cuppas and rewatching bits of video!

Got a Denso from Opie Oils for £207…..just looked and prices a lot higher and out of stock currently 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

We've got a ramp in our workshop too and all we removed was the under tray. It's a squeeze and it does need to be manipulated but it will come out of the gaps in the subframe.
