[quote="northernmonkeyjones"]........... and the problems of replacement engines for the 3.6 are well documented,

Can you elaborate a bit more? I have missed out on this info. Are new replacement engines not trustworthy if one is required?

Replacement base engine parts have in the past been hard to find. IIRC a few years back it wasn’t easy to get hands on new heads or blocks.

There was also the problem of badly rebuilt engines being sold on eBay etc. I’m sure that properly reconditioned engines were fine but a while back there was ads offering engine swaps for a couple of grand, to folks whose turbos had blown and taken a cylinder with it...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I had a 300 TDI Soft dash in about 2006, so slow it makes a TD6 look speedy but bags of character, wish I’d never gotten rid of it, they’re worth a fortune now!.

I'm not surprised, I'd love another RRC, such a rare sight these days unfortunately.

How many turbos have gone on the FFRR?

I know they go quite a lot on the RRS, however, is that not because there is no air around them, they don't cool down properly?

When I was buying my 3.6 I searched and searched for someone who had lost their turbos, found post after post on the RRS but don't think I found more than one or maybe two that had lost them on the L322. Porsche 911 (996)

Not got a LR of any kind at the mo, and got itchy feet.

[quote="mjdronfield"]The initial point doesn’t stand, the 3.6 could let go at any time without warning and then you will be left with a very expensive paper weight.

The 4.4 doesn’t do that.

Seriously ? I know of five 4.4's with engine failures, four currently for sale and one owned by a friend. Friends is in a 405, full history and went pop with zero warning, £9k fix.

Seeing as this thread has been revived and I hope Dr Rob reads this, can you tell me what symptoms you had which meant you had to have a new turbo please? Thanks Kev.

Good point JayGee, that's one of the conclusions that came from my thread discussing 4.4 reliability. It was noted that nearly all the 4.4TDV8 engine failures have been in L405's.

Just two 405's, can't remember the years I'm afraid
I currently own a 2006 3.6 (Just done egr delete at 93k), was looking for a 4.4 and was a little surprised so see these currently for sale with such serious issues compared to advertised 3.6's. Could be just coincidental these are for sale at this time however it has made me consider keeping the 3.6 for now
