So how would the coolant getting into the cylinders? And what test can be done to figure out if this is the case?

Cheers Regards

If it is a porous block the coolant wicks it’s way through the block material and into the cylinder walls, on the old 4.6 P38’s the only solution was to fit ‘top hat liners’ to each cylinder.

These then blocked the ingress of coolant into the cylinders but didn’t stop the block from being porous, unfortunately nothing can I believe.

Best of luck.. ______________________________

So im going to pick the car up soon, no coolant found in the sump at all, and they have checked pipes, and egr cooler and oil cooler etc.. So im kind of at a loss now..

I may be clutching at straws but im hoping it may have been a air lock or something?

Ive ordred some uv dye and i may put that in and have a hunt around with a uv torch..

Other than that im not sure what to do? Regards

Had coolant loss issues on a number of V8 Classics with the 3.9 engines - turned out to be coolant getting past head gaskets into the cylinders. To diagnose I found that along with a compression test , taking a look in the cylinder with a boroscope showed the face of the piston in the effected cylinder to appear like it had been steam cleaned compared to the good cylinders. One I had did pressurise the cooling system with combustion gasses (quite spectacularly) the other didn’t. Not sure how easy it is to get a look into the diesel V8’s as I’m new to these engines but I’d have thought you could get a look in by removing the glow plugs?

Hope you get it sorted

Either through a crack in the head or block or a head gasket failing at a water way into the combustion chamber.

Test wise a sniff of the coolant with a sniff tester would be a start to see if there is combustion gases in the coolant.

So you either have a tiny leak externally which is not apparent on the myriad of possible places it could be observed readily on or you have a small leak into a cylinder.
I know what my money is on.
Try the k seal option and see how it goes instead of throwing more money at it than it needs.

Ive ordred some UV dye and im going to put that into the coolant and see what happens,

Im also looking at extended warranty which may be good if it is head gasket etc Regards

Good luck.

But if its in an inaccessible place and the leaks so slight the dye will not show.

I don’t know anything about this k seal or other leak stoppers.

Are they safe to use or are they a bodge? Regards

I would just drive the car and keep checking the coolant level daily when cold and see what happens. Thumbs Up

I used to think that it was a bodge until I used some Barsleaks in a Transit to get me home once - it stopped the leak after a few miles & was still holding some 100,000 miles later..............
Not bad for a bodge & in my mind worth trying. 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6
