What have they found that makes them think it’s a porous block?
Not that I’m suspicious of anything a main dealer tells me but that sounds like the sort of guess they might make because they can’t find a leak?

EMAIL I Received from them:

Good morning Darren,

I have spoken to Matt the Tech on your coolant leak. Its not great news I’m afraid. We have removed the intake pipe work and most of the items in the V.

There aren’t any signs of external coolant leak in the V from the oil cooler, we have removed the EGR Cooler to test and inspect, this is fine, no leaks or coolant staining.

We have removed the intake pipes to check for signs of coolant, (which could suggest a head gasket failure) but all are dry, with no staining or crystals.

The next step ref a LTB, is to re build the engine to a point we can road test the vehicle to get it hot, then drain the engine oil and re-fit the sump bung and leave the vehicle overnight, to see if any coolant passes into the sump.

We have seen this before, which strongly indicates a porous block.

At this point though I will need to ask for some diag time from you, we have spent about 3.5 hours on it FOC so far. To continue if you wish we need another 2 hours @ £100 per hour, (discounted).

Let me know your thoughts

Regards Regards

Daz

Looks like l’m wrong - sounds like they are having a proper look but a porous block is still something that I thought had gone away decades ago

I don't think you've got much choice chap.
They've gone this far, for a few hundred more you should get a definitive answer hopefully.
Be very interested to see what happens next. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Can they not pressure test the coolant system instead of just looking for signs of a leak.

oil has been dropped and no coolant is visable no seperation etc.. sump drain bung has been re installed and will be left overnight and cracked open again tommorow to see if any coolant comes out the sump..

Not sure where to go if it comes back all clear.

Possible airlock that cleared and the level dropped?

I was wondering about fuel burning heater or anything similar? Also CamTechCraig mentioned something about pipes for the rear heating.. ive asked the dealer about that also. Regards
