I had a cracked inlet manifold a while back. It gave me the sooty mess on the bonnet soundproofing and restricted performance errors but no whistle.

I'd be thinking about the exhaust manifold for the whistle.

I’ve got it half stripped down at minute as I blanked the egr pipes off after dinner this evening with the kit , the manifold does look manky but Still haven’t properly checked it yet , I’ve removed the support bar and various cables so I can give it a good soapy water test In the morning , the only performance related error I seem to have had was when I thought I had popped the turbo but turned out to be dodgey fuel tank sender and I had run out of fuel ,the whistle isn’t there until under load and vehicle is in motion so I think it probably is the exhaust manifold , this site is an absolute god send though 👍

The inlet manifold doesn't usually crack on the central piece, it's the ricker cover parts down either side. Spray them with soapy water. Cracks seem to be along the top edges so can be seen without removing the metal shields.

Exhaust manifold is not so visible! Think I have a slight exhaust manifold leak. I get a bit of a whistle on real full boost. Has done it for over a year, not getting worse, no associated problems.

Thanks That gives me a good place to start in the morning 👍

Not looking forward to putting everything back together , I shouldn’t have taken the support bar out to do the egr blanking .
Thinking of cutting it in half and making a joining bridge piece with 2 wing nuts 😂

Yeah my whistle I can’t hear on full boost probably still there but covered by wind noise ,I can hear mine noticeably 1st 2nd and 3rd gears and when feathering the throttle .

Does sound very much like a boost leak, and rushing/escaping air

Time to have it smoke tested

Mine makes this noise. Does it resemble this?

Hi Andy

Yours seems to be hissing , my symptom is a definite whistle , most noticeable in last video of the three I posted.

I’ve checked my top hoses can’t see anything a miss and no smoke or error messages , I’ve ordered a silicone hose kit from Lrparts.net should be here tomorrow , have you checked your top hoses to intercooler seems to be a common area for them to let go .

Mine is back at the garage as I had the joyous experience of no brakes this morning and a broken brake line 😂 I still love
It though

I’ve replaced the top hoses with silicone ones.
I’m told mine is an exhaust manifold stud broken but I took it for a smoke test and when they had it up on the ramp, they checked and said all the studs they could actually see were intact. It’s usually the rearmost ones that snap due to the manifold warping and breaking the stud 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded

Nothing came of the smoke test then ? , I think I read on a post here that the exhaust gaskets can do strange things also resonate and chatter at certain times also

Yes, I found a hole in the air intake from the airbox to the turbo

Brilliant So was that definitely the cause of your noise ? Did that cause any other symptoms other than your noise
