I tried all sorts of combinations of button, door and ignition and it makes no difference at all. The LED doesn't flash the two or three times it describes in the booklet either. I'll just live without it.

Bear with me.... I have only had my RR for a couple of weeks after moving from a Mercedes S-Class. On the Merc I had access to full dealer level diags and (free) online access to official workshop EPC and maintenance manuals tailored to my VIN. On trying to find the equivalent for the RR I have been looking at IIDTool specs and have come across this setting
-Retractable running board
• Undefined
• Not Fitted
• Fitted - Button controlled
• Fitted - Menu controlled

The step control module is a Ford badged device and a bit of googling shows US cars with a very similar menu to the RR with control of the steps in the main screen.

To my point... does anyone have the IIDTool and steps fitted and have you tried the "Menu Controlled" option ?

I will check that tomorrow for you if I get a chance. Having said that, as I mentioned a few posts back, Patrick @ GAP said that settings for the deployable steps in the IID tool would not make any difference because they are a separate system. And EDIT - having read your post properly, there never has been an option in the touch screen for the steps if that is what you mean?

Mine are working perfectly on a MY11 car so hope that doesn't mess them up - we shall see!

So far as switch operation goes, there seems to be a bit of confusion about how it is supposed to work. This is taken from the instruction book that came with my car and is exactly how mine work:

Roof Access (steps locked out):

To enter roof access mode, the car must be in park and/or the parking brake on.

Turn the ignition on (press the start button without foot on brake) and then press and hold the steps button for 3 seconds. This must be done within 5 seconds of turning on the ignition. The switch indicator should illuminate and the steps should deploy and stay out, even with ignition off.

To stow the steps, either repeat above, lock the vehicle, or start and drive the car greater than 5Kph.

Switching the steps on and off:

With the ignition off, press and hold the steps button first and then turn the ignition on. each time you do this, it cycles the steps system on and off. When switching from off to on, the switch light should flash 3 times. When switching from on to off, it should flash 2 times. Current Cars:

Thank you, I tried the switch exactly as you have listed and bingo, works a treat. I think the 'within 5 seconds' bit is what I missed.

Also, for interest, I just popped out and changed the steps in the CCF file to the "Menu Controlled" option and as expected, it made no difference to the operation of the steps. Current Cars:

I can’t remember if I had to remove the glove box, I think it dropped down enough to give the access needed but I do recall that the wiring for the overhead switch is only just long enough and needs careful routing. I suggest that you reassemble that bit first and take care with the airbag warning light in the overhead panel as it is pretty fragile.

You’ll spot the light if you watch the overhead panel when you start it up.
You’ll know you’ve puggied it when you get an airbag warning light on the dashboard just as you congratulate yourself for finally doing a fiddly job without smashing anything.

Yes glovebox has to come out.
