4.2 supercharged misfire on idle

Hello, I’ve had my Range Rover for around a month now since owning it’s had a misfire on start up that would clear once warm. In the last week it seems to have got worse to always running lumpy on idle. The car has been converted to run on lpg and appears to be more noticeable on lpg, some times misfiring while driving. But I’m convinced this is related to the misfire on start up. I’ve had the throttle body off and it looked clean apart from a small amount of oil but I gave it a clean up. Changed the spark plugs cleaned the maf, replaced the pvc. When I had it plugged in it didn’t show a fault got my local mechanic to have a look but couldn’t see any thing and suggested a software up date from Land Rover. I asked him about running live values but said his machine doesn’t do that.

I’ve spent lots of time reading the internet at a bit of a dead end, thinking I may have to book it in to a more qualified garage.

I would be grateful for any advice and to keep me away from the steelers.

what codes were showing ie which cylinder/s were misfiring?

if its just one cylinder try swapping coil packs and see if the problem moves with coil pack

No codes relating to the misfire, I have had eml flashing at me a few times but just in lpg.

suspect your lpg system is not set up to optimum and needs a service/calibration

BUT if the original misfire is when on petrol when its cold further investigation will be required

how many miles has it done since conversion?

any valve saver system fitted?

any petrol addition selected to help combat potential of valve seat recession?

VSR can be an issue on these engines on poorly set up lpg systems.

ps even when a constant cel is not standing a simple elm327 with a phone app can show misfire codes

Car has done around 20-30k on lpg. It had a flash lube system and I believe 10% petrol injection. I did think it could do with a lpg tune up but would be nice to get rid of the misfire on petrol first.

Car still drives on lpg and petrol drove fine last night just lumpy at idle.
It’s not throwing up any misfire codes on petrol only if left on lpg and then it’s on all cylinders.

Check for leaks on the flexi pipes from the LPG injectors to the inlet manifold. They tend to stiffen over time and don't seal as well. To be honest it normally smells of LPG too if they are leaking.

Plugged in to day and seems to be miss firing down one side more than the other. Did think about ordering a couple of coil packs and trying to change a few around.

I am seeing very similar...

I have a 2007 SC L322 and just had a rebuild and I get a slight randomised shudder when im in the drivers seat consistently at idle. With these error codes...

I have had new engine rebuild, and new coolant hoses (all), engine and Supercharger water pumps, thermostat, new radiator, new chains-tensioners, MAF, PCV, spark plugs etc. Car runs ok but judders like I said at idle more so, but I believe the judder was there pre re-build and we never saw the following misfire codes.

Any ideas gents. Coil packs/injectors maybe? Any advice deeply appreciated I'm at my witts end after spending alot on the rebuild. Error codes materialised in the first 50 miles after a short stop.

Why would this particular part only create warnings on 1 bank? Is this something you've seen before?

Could be a possibility that the sensor is on its way out or the timing is slightly out on that bank after the rebuild. Try swapping sensors across banks if the problem moves to the other side you will have nailed it (thats if they are not lh and rh parts)

Sure I've read about this problem on USA Jaguar forums, they are the place to look at for the 4.2 and 5.0 supercharged engines as there are loads over there...

It was usually a fuel rail, there is one each side, or injectors, some have had to replace all the injectors and both fuel rails, others have had success with some BG 44k fuel injector cleaner...

Do some googling, you will find something... Thumbs Up Pete
