This is turning in to a nightmare
Camshaft in the vice, ½ “ rattle gun won’t touch it, ¾ rattle gun won’t touch it.
Got both the inlet cams loose
Cant undo the right hand exhaust cam.
Got my son to hold the cam with the 27mm spanner (it closer to 26mm)
Tried it with the rattle gun, spanner slipt off the cam, turned the cam ½ a turn
So now I suppose I have some bent valves RR 2005 4.4 petrol

That is a potential nightmare i would agree.

I am trying to think if you can time the engine and get the cam chains back in place with the exhaust sprockets left bolted to the camshaft but removing one or both of the cams to enable you to get the cam chains back on, does that look feasible ?

Check the procedure but i think the cams are normally removed with the crank in the 45 deg. before TDC mark but you are past that point anyway and i don't think that will cause you a problem.

Regarding a bent valve, if you can get the engine back together as far as the chains and guides and timed you can carefully wind it over by hand initially and check for any resistance and any gap with a feeler gauge between the hydraulic lifters and the cam lobes indicating the valve is not closing.

If a valve is bent then it is head off but i would get your guides sorted first and then check that.

I will have to look in to the hydraulic lifters and find out about them, how they work.
Some of them, I can press down on and they are springy, others feel solid
Had to go to the tool shop this morning and buy some torx bits, I never said anything about them but the guy started telling me every one is complaining about them being useless
I bought three
I have a decent three phase compressor, cranked it up to 150lb and after about the forth try with the ¾ rattle gun they let go.
Now I have both exhaust cams out and the torx bolts loose
The camshaft retainers have numbers on them but they don’t mean anything so I have had to etch numbers on them so I know where they came from.
I think my next move is to remove the inlet camshaft, make a fitting to screw in to the spark plug hole and put about ten pound pressure in the cylinder.
That should tell me if the valves are seated ok, fingers crossed RR 2005 4.4 petrol

i dont know if thats ok or not
i can get parts from china myself at about 1/3 of his price, dont know what brand RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Good news on getting the bolts shifted, I hope the valves go ok, you are basically doing a leak down test but when i bought a cheap leak down tester to test my compression the air blew straight through but my compression when cranked was 170 psi + so I am not sure why or how or maybe my valves were open. Check lifters are not collapsed and then measure between the folower and the cam lobe, there should be no gap.

The HVA or lifters or tappets or whatever people prefer to call them are basically hydraulic and fill with oil to take up the slack between the cam and the valve and shouldn't be spongy but if the car hasn't been run for a while they do leak back which can cause the start up rattle and also ongoing tapping which is when the bleed procedure can be used but that involves running the engine at 3000 rpm for a period of minutes (its online and you tube) and repeating but i dont think it lasts long term so if you have the cash i would replace them but 32 x £20 is a fair lump of cash so i might be saving until you know the valves are good. What sort of price have you seen them at ?

Hi, thanks for tour interest
I have removed all the camshafts and made an air adaptor for the sparkplug.
This engine is very dirty in side, I have never seen anything like it, its like the engine oil has turned to tar.
I have had a couple of car mechanics look at it and they say not to worry, they have seen this before and the engines ran ok with no problems.
I am reluctant to take out the spark plugs until I know there is no dirt around them which could fall in to the cylinder.
When I was an apprentice, one of the younger apprentices took the spark plugs out of a jaguar, which was in for its first service and a very small brass nut fell in to the cylinder.
It kept closing up the spark plug gap, they had to take the head off to find out what was causing the problem, ended up having to hone the bore and replace the piston.
Lucky it wasn’t me.
So its always on my mind.
I have a Borescope, in fact I have two, but I cant find them, which I intend to use to look around the plugs as I cant see in there very well
I have been looking for it for a week now, if I don’t find it in the next couple of days I will buy another.

Getting there then, I always use an airline to blow around my spark plugs before removing them.
i have seen what you describe on heads that have been up for sale. My concern would be flushing all the crap out the tiny holes that are in the tensioners and other oil ways but you should be fine with a couple of oil changes.

Trying to buy parts on ebay is proving difficult, I am trying to buy the whole kit for M62, I message the seller and they say it won’t fit, or they don’t bother answering.

Have you thought about finding a drop shipper - somewhere in the UK you can have parts from different suppliers sent to and then they package it all up and send it out to you when its all arrived so you only pay one lot of postage.
