Australia 2005 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 V8 Zambezi Silver

I have started working on it at last.
Some time ago I took the bottom sump plate off and lot of bits of plastic fell out, some pieces half as big as my thumb.
I have watched a few videos about changing the timing chain.
I am finding doing this very slow as I am not sure if I am doing the right thing most of the time.
I am at the stage of taking the rocker covers off but I am reluctant to take them off while the plastic boxes which hold the wiring for the plugs are still in place as any dirt or rubbish hiding there will fall in to the motor.
A video I watched, the guy said (I think) just remove the five bolts that hold the fuel rail on and it will, with the black boxes, just lift up out of the way.
Well, on way ha ha RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Why do you want to take out the dipstick?
There is a small nut 8, 9 or 10 mm where the tube meets the sump which you can reach from underneath quite easily and two cam cover bolts hold it at the top.
I took mine right out and it was a total pain trying to get it back in as it has a couple of bends in it. It does bend out the way if you just remove the cam cover bolts or if you want it more out the way remove the small nut at the bottom but just don’t take it right out from the side of the engine bay. There is an o ring at the bottom where it fits into the sump.

I got mine out with a bit of friendly persuasion, it was getting it back in that was probably the hardest part of my timing chain and vanos rebuild Smile

I was watching a video last week, the guy, at the end of the video said, you cant use Chinese cam timing tools because it will show up as a fault.
I had already bought my cam timing tool, but now when I look at it, I see it is not square.
I bought it from an Australian dealer but I am sure its made in china
Is it supposed to be square
I wondered if someone who has this tool would mind looking at there’s and let me know if there’s looks the same as mine

Looking at the timing chain guides on ebay, it looks like the left one is all plastic, anyone know if a metal based one is available RR 2005 4.4 petrol

They are all aluminum backed plastic, i used febi bilstein ones in mine.
i think your cam locking blocks will be ok although you would expect general good machining practice would prevail and they would be square but china don't seem to have the same ideas of what is wrong or right when it comes to precision engineering.
This is how they will fit on your engine so check they square against the bottom face and the locating surface.

i like the look of these https://www.germanautosolutions.com/diy_te...ls_diy.php

i made some retaining blocks out of tubing and an old spark plug, not that i needed to, i just did.

But i have to tell you now even though you don't need to know !

I was replicating the Landrover tool shown on the attached.

i had an old spark plug and took a length of mild steel tube and tapped it over the ceramic part of the old spark plug and tack welded it to the metal part of the plug and then took a length of studding and tapped that into the tube and tack welded that to the tube. the wooden blocks you can see and then i just used a nut and washer to hold the wooden block to the studding.
Must be the only part i didn't photograph. i screwed the spark plug into the spark plug hole carefully and i didn't over tighten the nut on the clamp.
i only made them as My project was running over a few days and didn't want the timing blocks to accidentally get dislodged and screw the timing.

They do but i don't think most people use them as they don't come with the cheap timing kits.
Pics are from Rave which is a must .
