it's shocking how those little chips suddenly turn into a crack

I had a largish chip in my screen, which was looking like it was going to have to become a crack, and then just after Christmas, on one the rare days that there was a frost, I put the heated screen on and crack it did it for me When I phoned the insurance company they didn't even want to know how it happened... I get the feeling that the roads are disintegrating, so badly now a days, that broken windscreens are an everyday occurrence  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

haha sounds about right, fortunately a lot of construction traffic is on my route, I'm sure a stone will flick up at some point

Any comments on the wind noise? I'm pretty sure its due to the top seal being the problem, does anyone know if autoglass replace it as standard practice? would like to be present when mine is done so I can remove the crappy sealant, don't want yet another leak!

The wind noise is the lower trim, if it's not bedded on a thin bead of glue it howls like a banshee

Top seal is reused, unless you have a good fitter, then it gets broken and a new one is used  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Due to the types of roads here in NZ, we go thro windscreens regularly. I always specify OEM (never a problem) and the fitters always use new clips and replace top seal with one from RR Sport as it is more flexible. Insurance pay without issue.

As a few of you have seen, from my pics of the Velar, my car has a rather nice crescent shaped crack down at the bottom near the windscreen wiper bus since it hasn't changed since last year when it passed the MOT, imagine my surprise when I get a call to say my car has failed due to "a crack in the lower portion of zone A"!
When I explain this passed last year, the glib reply was "it couldn't have been like that last year, sir otherwise we would have failed it". Because of the shape, it's impossible for it to have got any worse but what more can I do, so it's a replacement time. National Windscreens have been good so far and got hold of the correct Pilkington version, so here's hoping for a successful fitting on Monday  Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

Sent 2 guys out to do it and all went well and pilks screen fitted. Only thing is they fitted it a couple of mm low and I mean a couple....Hasn't affected anything and if I wasn't so OCD I wouldn't have noticed. It's not an issue though And all then it's work as they should[/i] There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

For those 2002-2004 models with original or OEM windscreens, how effective is the rain-sensing? Prior to the screen replacement, I don't recall any issues. Now, with the aftermarket Chinese screen, even on the most sensitive position, the screen has to be almost totally obscured before it will wipe. The trouble is, with rain-sensing, one doesn't get a manual intermittent wipe option.

The problem is that up until the last month, rain was so rare that I can't recall just how good the sensing was. I want to go back to the fitters and complain. I'd like an OEM screen fitted. Ron B. VK2OTC

It shouldn't make a difference if it is a replacement screen, the sensing is done through a small window in the top hatched area of the screen. The sensor stays attached to the car. So long as it can see the outside it should work, the issue comes if the alignment is out or the hole is in the wrong place.

With oem screens there is no perceptible difference from that was fitted as standard.

Mines a '12 it will sweep the window with a few spots of rain in the most sensitive setting. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Original factory fit is a Land Rover and Pilkington branded screen. OEM from a windscreen repair van is just Pilkington no landrover badge.

Had a pilk screen on both the disco and old FF and no issues at all. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Aha! If I had a Pilkington, there wouldn't be an issue.

I removed the sensor and took a few photos. The sensor mount is not central in the masked area, it's about 2mm off-centre. That may have a bearing on the issue but....

Note the circular clear spot in the mask. That's nowhere near the red sensor window in the rain sensor. I'm not sure of the purpose of that hole or the red sensor window but if it's part of the rain sensor system, surely they should be aligned.

Well, after adaption, my rain sensor is working nearly properly again. It is no longer necessary to have it on the most sensitive setting in the hope it might wipe the screen. I've had to turn the sensitivity right down. I suspect it's overly sensitive because the light sensor is receiving no light and the system assumes it's night time.

At least it rained yesterday afternoon so I could test it - the sky was cloudless today. Very Happy

Now, do I go back to the windscreen suppliers and complain the light sensor is blanked off (it's probably the screen for a later non-BMW model) or do I remove the rain sensor and pare away a bit of the mask at the correct light sensor position?

I knew the P38A fairly well but I'm still learning with the L322.  Ron B. VK2OTC
