Kaspersky, Mcafee and Norton are the usual suspects, if you are running an antivirus program, and you should be, disable it and see if that improves the situation. Mac vs PC. It's probably less controversial to talk religion (or Brexit)!

Macs are generally a lot more expensive than PCs and better put together. GOOD PCs are about the same price as Macs and as well put together, but most are at the bargain end of the market. Macs are few in number, but they own the high end of the market. A $300/£150 PC will probably get you about 18 months.

An old PC is a lot easier and cheaper to upgrade than an old Mac. Mac - get one that does want you want. When it no longer does want you want, toss it. PC - can upgrade as needed, but there's a time when you might seriously be left with nothing original except the box and the fan.

I used to build my own PCs years ago and had some very slick machines in the past, but I replaced my last one with a Mac when it didn't work any more. I got fed up with having to feed the PC more bits, memory, software, etc and it randomly had major dicky fits ending in blue screen action pretty much every time it was turned on!

My iMac is a 2011, it has been running (continuously) since then, apart from the occasional power cut and turning it off to fit more memory! It's still fast, quiet and so far reliable, even the software updates apple forces on us haven't slowed it down to much.

The thing is they are pricey, mine go through the business so it's not so much of an issue, but they don't do anything a PC doesn't, IMHO the just do it slightly slicker. Windows machines are now getting back to being on par with the new surface pcs, but the bottom end of the PC market is full of tat.

Lost patience with swmbos cheap windows 7 laptop this week, but it is 18 months old so is probably due for upgrading, but she isn't going to get a Mac but another acer laptop!! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

RR2008HSE, it's not PCchilling, it's PCillin Anyway like all things windows it's been upgraded a few times.. now called Trend Micro Internet Security 2016, or something like that... It was recommended to me by my Brother in Law (EX, D'OH!) who worked for a company who did data processing for Amex and a few Banks.... It was sold to me as industry standard, but they sort of kept it quirt It has worked very well.. but as the years have gone on and I've stayed in the dark ages... I have sort of been left behind

I have acquired a 64 bit windows 7 pc, was putting off the hassle of changing everything especially emails... then eventually found that I could export copies to an empty file and then I tried to load that file, which had been sent to a stick, on to another machine that is running win7 They will only work with Vista I can now see why Vista is so hated throughout the computing world, they really don't do you any favours So it's back to forwarding the emails

Unless I set up the other PC and do file sharing on the network That ain't going to happen with Vista, thing doesn't like talking to it's self let alone another computer

My next worry is my new phone has an octa core processor.... does that mean that 64 bit is about to become so last year in favour of 128 bit? Should I tough it out a few more weeks  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I think I've dropped a clanger

So there I was all long in the face, due to another computer failure (I should be used to it owning a ffrr ) and a good friend took great pitty on me and donated a 64 bit puta with win7 home premium So I set about removing all the unwanted junk his kids had installed... and it got to the stage where I thought that it would be better to start again clean ......

And then the fun started...... It's an HP product, so the first hiccup was I couldn't download windows7 from Microsoft.. I had to get it from HP along with their 7 GB of junk I'm not having that... so after a lot of searching I finally found somewhere that Microsoft hadn't blocked and managed to download the iso. files for win7... I then read that it could be turned into a handy boot stick So I downloaded the conversion program and set about making the stick, if I can't boot it I'll get it with the stick

After much stick formatting, I sort of got the feeling that all wasn't going quite as expected.... back to the web... need to download a stick conversion prog from Microsoft ... Microsoft wouldn't let me download as I wasn't the original purchaser So I went back and managed to burn it to a disc... although I did have a hell of a time with that, until I realised that I'd put a blank CD in the drive and not a DVD Easy mistake when they are all printable discs... they really do all look the same

So at 6 pm (GMT for those who really care) I started the new install of windows 7, with my new disc the first thing it asked was did I want it to load the most up to date version.. saving me a lot of faffing about with up dates ...... It's been churning in the corner for 4.5 hours and it's still gathering internet information... I just wanted windows 7 not the entire net I'm beginning to think that I may have to crash it and start again ........ And then I'm half expecting your licence isn't valid and phone this helpline message... happened when I rebuilt my Vista machine .... I told them I'd changed the hard disc when in fact the only bit from the original computer was the dvd drive  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

But the good news I managed to do away with all things HP and the bloody partitions on the disc

I'm now battling Windows Mail...... which is pants Suggestions........... that don't cost  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Edit..... windows mail is pants...but Firefox is even worse

I was forced to use it on the other computer as Google stopped supporting it on Vista.... But now I'm back in the modern world, I can use Chrome again.. until Windows 7 is too old... a couple of weeks then

From the way this is working now, I reckon that Firefox was causing a lot of the slow running issues  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I've used it. Powerful, secure and easy to use. Although, the interface could use some work.

Although strangely enough windows mail has started to function normally now that firefox was given the Revo uninstaller treatment

I'll give windows a shot as there are no commercial use restrictions which I could fall foul of with the other program... although it could be argued that the way then cars have been eating the profits... I could probably get away with non profit status  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Windows 7 on a 64 bit machine with ssd

It's fast..... ssd turned up today, loaded a clean Windows, Trend and Mail in under an hour from start to finish....it took nearly 2 hours with the old hard drive..... the only thing that's slowing the system down now is the data input processor... but that's improving too, 2 fingered typing  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

If you are sticking with a Windoze machine it may well be worth getting into the habit of good maintenance if you havent already. Defrags, deleting old stuff and genera SSD good housekeeping etc.

You're not supposed to defrag an SSD as they don't store data the same way that spinners do. You do have to optimise them though, so download the toolbox software that is usually available from the SSD manufacturer.

You normally optimise around once a week to keep them up to scratch.

I'm going to put the hdd back as a storage medium.. got 4 Sata slots... 2 Sata drives, ssd and dvd, and only 2 power plugs, D'OH! plenty of molex plugs but only 2 of the little black things for the Sata drives.. you bet ya

And then there is the issue of where to put the extra drive... there's a 5.5" slot, a 3.5" slot and then nothing there's enough room to get 2 bricks side by side on end, but no bloody rack Why? do HP expect you not to add to their product? are they so delusional that they thing it will never need improving? or do they expect you to just toss it out with the black bags and get another.... Thinking about it the last option is the best for HP, but I will not be beaten.. although a long legged blond with DD air bags might get me to change my mind

Now is it better to only use the ssd for the operating system and use the hdd for programs, or should the hdd be files only? Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
