Has anyone discovered a clean up program that actually works? Rolling Eyes

Otherwise I'm in to a massive headache of a rebuild, and reloading everthing.. reckon that will be a 3-4 days solid loading Sad Plus some of the programs that I have were downloads and I haven't the foggiest how to save them, so I'll needing to shell out again...

the only proper clean would be to start from scratch..I agree it's takes a long time but in the end it's worth it..

a defrag can help a bit Paul.. ... - .- -.

Hi Paul, worth checking both CPU and memory utilisation via Task Manager to see if any particular process or App is hogging resources. Also worth doing a Disc Check in case you have some bad sectors (used to be CHKDSK/F in old DOS days).

Cheers,

What worked for me was replacing the C Drive with a SSID disc and running the operating system from the SSID ultra fast immediate response to everything.

Old or little use files can be stored on the non SSID disc/s but if you get a good size SSID disk (500GB Minimum) then everything is lightening fast. Thumbs Up

PS: Windows7 is the only OS I would use.

A good clean up/hoover would be useful on both desktop or laptop.

The other suggestion to look in task manager to see what's hogging resource. I had a problem on a lappy recently due to something called svchost which was using nearly 50% of the cpu. Google suggests a number of solutions but nothing really worked and I ended up dumping the lappy for a new on. Did try upgrading from Vista to Win7 but to no avail. 2017 5.0 Autobiography Supercharged

One other thing to check is if there is high utilisation of resources by an svchost process, it could be a virus. So worth running an AV scan. SDV8 AB MY 2019

how many icons have you got in your task bar at the bottom ,many programs install themselves and run continuously even if you rarely use it. Its ages since I used a windows based computer but here is a handy how to which can speed up your system I always used to uncheck any programs that i knew and that weren't used that often

I use a couple of applications, one is called CCleaner (crap Cleaner!) from Piriform ( http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner ) its free but works well.

The other one I use is Glary Utilities, I bought a license for this one as you can do more than with the free version. http://www.glarysoft.com/

For AV software I use the Microsoft Essentials as it doesnt hog resources and works, I used to use Kaspersky but it really slowed down my laptop, and I would never ever user Macaffee or Norton Utilities as they kill the machine!

The tip about removing icons is also a good one! at one point I had icons duplicated 3 times, once in the Start menu, another on the desktop and a third one on the bottom taskbar, I now use the taskbar for common used ones (Chrome or Firefox), and outlook, and use the start menu for most programs, and the desktop for photography applications (Photoshop, Bridge, Picasa)

Replace your hard drive with an SSD. Add more memory. those are the 2 things which make the most difference.

SSD you can buy as a kit which means you get a USB caddy and a decent USB cable with transfer software. Mine was done in about an hour.

Then look at what you have in the STARTUP section of the system config. START-RUN-type SYSCONFIG and hit enter. Check the boot section and the startup section in the main. Disable stuff you don't use. Initially I would do a diagnostic startup and time the thing. If it's similar to a normal boot up then disabling stuff isn't going to gain much.

Un-install old or unused programs. Clean up the registry. Disable the indexing service if it's running - you don't want this with an SSD anyway.

If it's still slow after that then buy a new PC bud. Thumbs Up
